Did we ever really get an explanation on what was different about 'lunar' primals anyway?

Fandaniel came up with the name. Mostly to be extra.
What is different between them and normal primals is that they can't temper people, as that power was given to the towers specifically. Beyond that, there's not much of a difference. Like KageTokage said, they were probably being faithful to the orginal design of the Magus Sisters.
Most likely. Also I feel like the 'lunar' thing was brought in just to touch up the models to be more fresh. Since the Magus Sisters are new to the game, they went with something more faithful rather than a lunar version when they had no baseline.Fandaniel came up with the name. Mostly to be extra.

It may also have something to do with the fact that the originals had already been defeated, something Fandaniel likely kept in mind. They couldn't use the original versions because the WoL along with Fordola and Arenvald had already defeated them, meaning their tricks were known. Lunar versions however would have new tricks due to having a brand new form. The Magus Sisters, a threat the WoL nor anybody had ever fought, would be usable in their original form due to this reason.
