SE I present you the cloud !

My office investigated using AWS for our application once.

It would require:

* Rewriting the entire code base
* Retooling the entire architecture
* A crapton of security problems since our software is required to be locked behind a VPN (less of an issue for a public MMO, but still something that has to be considered)
* Using a different database (we're in the process of switching now but back then we weren't ready)

We're still looking into it, but the amount of work it would require wasn't worth it for us. And it is a LOT of work.


An MMO, or any program really, has to be built from the ground to work on AWS or Azure. Spinning up extra instances on the fly is already done within the server infrastructure of the current XIV data centers, but it still has a maximum cap (see: Raubhan Ex.)

The one game that has not released yet which I think it was Microsoft investing in it building its game from the ground up based on cloud computing and if anything the other MMO New World uses Amazons Cloud servers and I know plenty that was having lag issues since there a warning that pops up saying its detecting lag lol and that could be due to the slopy coded game or their ISP being routed horrible or just one of the current draw backs for MMO cloud servers

While I understand shifting the game to a cloud solution is infeasible, I think if there's anything the past 3 days have demonstrated it's that they need to seriously re-evaluate their position when it comes to the login server.

I logged in at 3k in que get down to 1.8k hit 2002 and logged back in right away and came back to being in 1.8k and now dropped to 1.6k

So maybe its working now? or just happened to get back in line intime before others

I don't see the Cloud being a solution due to coding limitations. However, can't they rent servers via contract?

That’s exactly what you can do using cloud…. But it’s quite pointless to discuss here seening how very few apparently knows anything about the cloud but just argues ”you need to rewrite or write from ground up” which is utterbullcrap, there are tons of software running in the cloud that was written way before cloud hosting was even a thing.

If you get in within a threshold of time it'll preserve your place, but the problem is when you can't (cause it's at completely maxed capacity) or more realistically, the fact you got disconnected in the first place.

But you’ll find that basically all cloud providers offer this, and none are sold out due to pandemics or semiconductor delays.

People that think this is a realistic solution have virtually zero understanding of cloud computing, or what it means to maintain a service on the scale of this game.

So much of this.... cloud servers are VERY expensive. The operating cost for cloud hosted servers would put our subs up to about $25/month. Alongside this, even Amazon and Google cloud servers aren't limitless.

Depend on how many peoples are trying when it will become even more congested it will stop working
Yesterday morning I could retake my queue in evening I could not anymore
