Apple metaphor I think is being used a bit flawed here, but I do love me some metaphors.

So lets try it as such-

You paid for 5 apples organic, I gave you 5 apples non-organic, and maybe a few dirty too. I know I did you wrong so I give you 5 more apples (which we hope are organic).

I don't think there's really a good metaphor for this situation, but my version would be:

I am running a successful apple-a-day service, and I just started offering a new type of apple. As a result the service has surged in popularity so much that I don't have enough delivery trucks to keep up with the demand. For the past 3 days, some people have had to wait until late in the day to get their apples while others have not yet gotten their apples. Realizing this, I sent a message saying that I am working on the problem as best I can. I will give every single customer a bonus 7 days worth of apples, whether that's intended to make up for the frustration of late apples, or to reimburse the 3 days of lost apples so far (possibly more in future, but for now I am playing it more than safe by giving 7 and will amend that as the situation warrants).

Now I have these yahoos on the forums complaining that my promise of 7 apples doesn't make up for their 3 lost apples.

    But 7 + 3 apples = 15 apples and a Half Life 3 release date, so I think I got you there!

Either metaphor we're on the same page though, there is currently a net gain of apples lol.
