Amaurot isn't so much "modern" as "Art Deco", a style that is almost a century old now, even if it is considerably more modern than your average fantasy setting.

I don't see any reason to assume it's our world, and I'd be annoyed if they tried to pull it off at this late stage.

Technically our world already is canon to FFXIV at this point. The Nier raid series is linked directly to the other Nier games and a version of Earth is present within them.

I think we can just quietly ignore the whole NieR raids' canonicity to the greater FFXIV lore at this point though Theo because even the development team have avoided approaching the topic closely and just shrug. It's really just meant to be fanservice with nothing more than just a "What was that all about? Who knows?" result (and, it wasn't even on the Source, it was on the First, a parallel world... ughhh I'm doing it again, I'm overthinking things! ).

Really, the only FF titles to be directly connected to Earth (or more specifically, our world) were, tellingly, animated features (the CG FF theatrical movie The Spirits Within was set on a post-apocalyptic Earth, specifically, New York, and the 2000s' TV anime FF Unlimited started out with a dimensional portal opening up in the sea offshore from Japan where no less than Bahamut and Leviathan appear and start causing trouble), unless you regard the 'St Ivalice' aspect of FF Tactics Advance as being on our Earth, with the FF series in general stated in-universe as being a game series and other real-life trappings such as the cast all wearing Japanese sailorfuku school uniforms.

FFIV also called it's world 'Earth' but it most definetely was not our Earth, and FFVII jumped all over the place with it's setting (originally it was meant to be set in a ruined New York, the vestiges of which were recycled for the aforementioned FFTSW - to say nothing of a 'Korean BBQ plate' showing up in the Wall Market diner and Barret giving Cloud a PHS phone), and FFXV.... uses real-world products like smartphones, real-world businesses and other real-life names, and its environments are based on real-world locations, but it's a totally different world that isn't even called Earth.

FFXIV on the other hand, is it's own unique world, what J.R. Toilken called a 'secondary world', a world distinct from our world with it's own setting and history that may draw from real world aspects, but is unique in it's own right. Hydaelyn and it's Shards are it's own distinct world, it is not Earth, nor was it ever.

*And to say nothing of the Fourth-Wall breaking the Rising events in FFXIV delight in indulging in, especially that whole 'Eighteenth Floor' thing.... *
