It would probably depend on the chest piece's design, but a lot of the aiming pieces that I've seen could benefit from no shoulder pads, especially since it's almost always only 1 pad.I feel like it would be easier to just increase the bust slider beyond 100% rather than placing shoulder pads into the chestpieces. This would result in unnatural shapes in many cases, depends on the chestpiece in question. Also, some chestpieces this doesn't seem like it would be "logically" possible. For example the Light Steel Galerus. The chestpiece is clearly a solid metal piece, so how would you hide the pauldrons/shoulder pads in the chestpiece? There's no where for them to fit!
The Glamour Effect: That awkward moment when you realize you know FFXIV's gear pieces better than your own wardrobe X'D
I can't see how a visor like option would be a problem, I know for me personally shoulder pads have ruined many a nice glamour I was trying to make.
I like this option. I think it would be hilarious to be able to flip your shoulder pads up so they can act as shields for your ears....
lmao, not quite what I meant but hell, why not. I was thinking more like an on or off type deal, like how some hats have an eye patch with visor on, or nothing with visor off.
I agree with the concept but, as others have said, it would basically be impossible to execute. Heck, even hats which do have the visor function don't all actually incorporate a visor up/down mode even if it visibly looks like they should.
What I would like to see that would be more doable would be more uses of models with variations. We already see this a little bit with dye patterns, but if they're going to reuse a coat anyway it would be nice if they actually altered the "new" version of that coat to be different than the old one in some way (such as having one with pauldrons and one without). Sure they likely share the actual visual model on the backend so it's not as simple as it sounds but it would still be less work than making an entirely new model.
The shoulderpads are actually part of the chestpiece... Removing them might work in some cases, but for others it might "break" the 3D mesh. If this happened to be an option, they certainly would have to go retroactively adjusting lots of pieces... And if they can't even do that for Viera and Hroth headgear, I presume they wouldn't for this matter as well. This is something that has been bothering me for a while and I know at least one of my friends also hates this. Shoulder pads can easily ruin what would otherwise be a great chestpiece. This is especially true for some races *cough* Elezen *cough* because of the weird proportions. It can also throw the piece's whole balance off when the pad/armor is only on one shoulder *cough* aiming *cough*. Sometimes these pads can be ridiculously big, though probably nowhere near what they have in WoW (based on what I've heard).
I understand some people probably like the shoulder pads, and good for them, but for those of us who don't, we're stuck with them. It would be really cool to get the option to hide them, just like the visor option.
What about if we all accept items already in the game are left as they are but going forward they add an option to hide shoulder pads? Personally I would really appreciate that. The shoulderpads are actually part of the chestpiece... Removing them might work in some cases, but for others it might "break" the 3D mesh. Maybe a patch or 2 down the line give an Shoulderless/Altered versions of popular dungeon gear to crafters. Maybe the main material component can drop in the associated dungeon a la crafted primal weapons.
The crystarium guard armor has to be the worst offender for this. Almost all the NPCs use a version with the cloak being the prominent feature and no pauldrons. Then we get one with absolutely gigantic shoulder pads that really do ruin the appearance of it imo.
A toggle for at least some armors would be nice. Particularly in cases where they already have the work done for a cleaner version.

Well, I certainly wouldn't be mad at that...
To be honest, not just shoulderpads, but sometimes certain armor sets have some "add ons" on top of everything that would be interesting not to have in some cases. Maybe a checkbox on the glamour panel to "hide details" like shoulderpads, straps (ie the fannypack on the Casual chestpiece), waist flaps, etc.
I just played devil's advocate to question the actual feasibility of the idea versus whatever efforts they would be willing to invest. I always go for the principle that, with Glam, more options = more diversity.
