Good day all,

One of my FC mates is looking to start leveling their lvl 16 NIN and I offered to tank for him. The thing is, I haven't played my PLD since the end of ARR and I've got no idea what I'm doing. My plan is to:

1. Start with Guildhests to get back in the swing of things.
2. Move on to the lowest level dungeons and progress step-wise from there.
3. (?) Tank squadron missions, maybe?

I'm level 52 and have gear appropriate for that level, so I'm not worried about that. My main concern is straight-up starting to tank again and the risk of backlash that entails.


My request for you experience folks is this; how much has PLD changed since ARR, and what would you do differently, if anything, than I am if you were getting back into it after all this time. I appreciate any and all advice you can give.

If you had no trouble with PLD back then, then you might actually get bored tanking.

Just kidding... or am I?

You now have a 2 stage aoe combo instead of Flash. The combo skills can also be buffed with Fight or Flight. Your tank stance enmity multiplier has been heavily buffed, and other effects (-dmg dealt, -dmg recieved) have been removed. Your dmg recieved is reduced by a trait, so you can turn your brain off from enmity issues, just deal dmg and you are fine!

Sheltron has been moved to earlier levels (guaranteed block for 4/6s), and the oath gauge to use Sheltron increases by auto attacks which are also triggered by simply using your skills. Direction for AA doesn't matter.

You will see, you have an easier time to focus on mitigation and positioning. Wall-to-wall pulls are most common, but watch out for Brayflox! In my experience, it can be overwelming for healers since they get their stronger spells after 35 (e.g. Regen for WHM) and dmg recieved skyrockets from Haukke quite a bit.
Otherwise, you will be fine. Guildhests I deem useless, as most are done within a minute anyway. What's important is muscle memory, as long as you know where your buttons are, you will have no issue.

You can also do Palace of the dead floor 1 to 50. You'll get your skills drip fed to you, it's excellent to relearn a job

That's OK.
Your friend has no idea what they're doing on their new class either.
And at level 16 you can both learn the jobs from the ground up.

ItMe, I'm more worried about the other people than my friend. I guess there's nothing else to do but put my shield up, head down, and charge in.

As there is no circumventing the learning process, no one can fault you for getting used to things (even at endgame there are still things to learn).
Keep up that attitude and you'll do swell~
