On the positive side of things it would be optional, and dependent on leveling jobs you might not be interested in, besides. And healers running around in armour can't be any worse than pig and frog costumes...?

wow don't let you transmog gear you cannot use (like a mage in heavy armor) so why would FF 14 do it :P
heck you can't even collect the appearance of gear you cannot use in the wardrobe if your not on that class

Jokes aside, the feature has precedent in FFXI, as mentioned. Different teams and all, I know, but I don't think FFXIV is averse to drawing inspiration (to say nothing of the majority of its race and creature designs) from its predecessor
