Agree, they are the only ones I can't understand a lot of time. Never had problems with Urianger or common tongue, I actually find it neat that they do not use contemporary english.

It's archaic English/bastardized early modern english.

Classic/old is a whole other beast.

Ironically the odd 'pirate speak' found in Limsa (especially with the members of the ROG's Guild like Jacke) makes perfect sense - it's Thieves' Cant, supposedly a subsitution language used by pickpockets, pirates, criminal gangs and subversives hundreds of years ago, although again like the Mock Shakesperean 'ye olde English', it's more commonly found nowadays in fantasy and historical fiction stories to give a kind of mystery and suspense to characters.

Of course, the other side of the coin is that it makes it so hard to understand just what the characters are saying, especially if you're unfamiliar with the concept and think it's just nonsense (which I suppose was the whole point of it in the real world). Either way, it's use in FFXIV makes perfect sense in the setting, and is meant to be yet another part of worldbuilding, establishing the setting and tone to the player.

As a non-native I didn't particularly have much problem with Urianger. It's a matter of context and finding similarities with modern English words. Jacke from Rogue/Ninja quests though... that's another matter. I haven't read the whole thread but I'm very sure he has been brought up by now. Jacke is hard to understand because he uses thieves' cant which is a cryptolect, intentionally hard to understand. But as someone who initially didn't know thieves' cant was a thing that existed and used for this character, I was confused for a while. Still, with context you can figure out the gist of things.

I don't see it as a bad thing there are some characters that speak in more obtuse ways. If anything they help me learn something new.

Learn english then, lol. It's not that hard. And if you don't want to then don't consume media/games that are meant for english speaking people.

I also don't visit a foreign country and complain in a bookstore that their books have such a complex weird language cause i am only able to say hello and goodbye in french.

It's crazy how entitled people are, you could take it as a opportunity to learn a bit how people back then spoke but ney, you have to act like a entitled Karen.

I think they need to put in Creole just to blow people's minds or some accents from the swamps of Louisiana that would make people cry for sure.

What's crazy is being so condescending over non-English natives struggling with archaic English and wishing for the game to be more accessible. What the hell lol.

Gosh yes please, we need seeq (from Ivalice) that speak in these accents. Would love that.

I mean we have also Feo Ul who speaks like a drunken irish man.

I greatly enjoy the script in this game and would never want to see it toned down or stripped of its flavour. It can be a bit much for some, especially ESL players, but know that the dialogue is written that way on purpose. Don't be discouraged if it is hard to grasp; with time you will get used to it, and figure things out through context. Your English is quite good actually, but everyone who plays FFXIV is bound to stumble upon words they don't know. Personally, I love it when this happens, because it means I can tab out to dictionary.com and learn something new!

    Speaking of...

    Essential: absolutely necessary; indispensable
"Completing your class and job quests is essential to playing effectively."

Quintessential: of or relating to the most perfect embodiment of something
"Urianger is Eorzea's quintessential basement-dwelling nerd."

OMG, all the "thieve's cant" dialogue in the Rogue quest line was such a nightmare, ha ha! So much of it has to be guessed at through context clues, or repetition. There's a good Reddit post where somebody lists the translation, though.
