He is now the last, and only ember of hope left remaining.
The sheer weight of the guilt on his shoulders, piled atop his seemingly impossible duty, must have been unbearable.

At the end of ARR, the WoL was betrayed by the very people we were trying to protect and even had to slay those we have shared a bond with.
As far as the WoL knew*, the friends who stood alongside us this whole time are all dead.
The blood we shed, our feats and accomplishments, all reduced to naught in an instant.
We don’t even have a place to call home.
Having fallen from 100 to 0 in such a brutal manner, how easy it would be to simply let go and slip into a dark, gentle place.
But that’s not what makes a hero, a hero.

*We as players knew the scions had infinite plot-armor, but that’s metagaming. The WoL would not know that.
I'd like to say that I always have felt that the writing team for XIV could just kill any of the scions, at any moment. As far as I was concerned at this part of the story, the scions were dead.
It made the entire moment that much more powerful when you keep going, a hero, anyways. :3

I always felt bad for her. It's a really messed up story.

I came here from the JJBA fandom, where lots of bodies drop, and nobody is safe, so... yeah.

If it’s all right, I’d like to know what heroic acts you had thought you were going to see from an isolated WoL. Heroes are heroes because they get stuff done, and the game had been making it clear dealing with Ascians and primals and Garleans was a group effort.

Emet-Selch is less redeemable than Yotsuyu. Yotsuyu had a bad childhood, sold off multiple times and we saw what she could've been before her brother brought back her traumatic memories.

Emet's excuse for genocide is he missed his friends and his old life.

This one is kind of fun to think about. Put yourself in the Ascians' shoes, as well as you can.

As you (one of three remaining people alive) hasten the cycle of life and death to try and rejoin these... things — not quite people — back into some semblance of those you once loved, the thing whose death you're hastening becomes more and more like a person.
Arguments of the sanctity of all life regardless of how fragmented aside, I wonder if it would have been more difficult for the Ascians to justify their actions as the "malformed creatures" began to more closely resemble them.

Maybe that's an underlying current in all Emet-Selch interactions and I was just semi-oblivious to it. He seems to waver back and forth between

I do not consider you to be truly alive. Ergo, I will not be guilty of murder if I kill you.
Rise up in madness and fury! Devour the vermin infesting the land which is rightfully ours!
    and

But then again, with a soul such as that... Mayhap there is another way. One which does not require bloodshed...
Oh don't look at me like that. You for whom I have only the highest expectations.
Between hope and hopelessness, but I could be reading too much into it.

Reading what isn't there. He's tempered him not wanting to fight us because there might be an easier way to bring about the rejoining is him simply being pragmatic. He outright says that even if we had passed his test and we refused his offer he'd kill us.

And yet Emet made a fail safe. How else do explain him rescuing us from the rift after holding the Crystal he made for us close to our chest. Sure, his tempering would have caused him to always go back to wanting the rejoinings. For all we know Zodiark could just want the rejoinings. Any other compulsions we don't know of if there are any.

She was about to change thanks to the old samurai, but for no reason, she takes the worst choice.

For me, Asahi's story really doesn't make any sense, she's a poorly written character who is just crazy for the sake of being crazy. "OMG I'm blinded fan"

The villains of Stormblood, I find them poorly written for the most part and here they are, bringing out Zenos in a deus ex machina way for Endwalker.

Stormblood the expansion was excellent because of the places visited by the domians, and the evolution of Lyse, but the villains... It was sucks!

She wasn't really 'about to change.' She essentially become a completely different person because she lost her memories. Then when she got those memories back, rejected that and went back to who she was before. There was no redemption there. No atoning for past misdeeds. She just...forgot she ever did them or went through any trauma. That's not redemption. She wasn't 'becoming a better person.' It was a trite, lazy hollywood amnesia plot.

If they just wanted a female boss, they could have given that and redeemed her if they wanted to write it that way. They did it with Shiva. (Okay Ysayle died, sure, but loooong after her shiva boss fight.)
