    I’d say I’d rather have an ff12 crossover, but it’s looking more and more like xiv is somehow a direct sequel to ff12

    It's not. Yoshi outright debunked that ages ago (stating clearly "Hydaelyn is not FFXII's Ivalice"), FFXIV just has FFXIV-specific areas, lore and events taken from FFXII and Tactics, but they are not directly linked as 'sequels/prequels' (it's the same as FFXIV referencing every other FF game in the series but not being directly connected to them). It's fanservice, nothing more.
