I have over 6000 commendations and nothing to show for it. Thoughts on mentorship.

The rewards are the commendations themselves. Now, we could talk about further commendation rewards, as commendations should promote good behavior - even if there are players out there who try and farm it. The mentor system should be entirely removed from the game though, but if it needs to remain, it shouldn't have any rewards, as helping other players is the reward. These are my thoughts as well. If they need to have an icon of some sort, make it something basic like it was in XI -

Going with a crown was a horrible idea as too many people wear it just because they think it looks cool and have no desire to actually help people. Rewards were an even worse idea IMO as you add in people who are only after the shiny items and now they have to 'suffer' the mentor roulette. Doesn't make for a good combination.

There will always be people who like to actually help people because that's what they do - and they'll do it without a pompous icon or having rewards dangled in their face.

To be totally honest, it baffles me that people would become mentors just for an insignificant icon. When I saw Zepla's video about this all those years ago, I never thought this was actually something happening--I thought it was just a joke. This said, sometimes I wonder if maybe people are not necessarily after the crown itself but rather because they somehow think being a mentor means that you're better at the game than everyone else, which is of course not true. In this case, I fear that no matter what the icon is changed to (even a simple M), it wouldn't solve the problem.

I am one of the people who obtained the mentor status because they like the battle crown icon. However, this doesn't mean that I can't or don't mentor people who are asking for assistance. I was doing that already before I got the mentor role.

This case is ok since you actually help and don't just treat the crown as a piece of glamour and act in an awful manner that contributes to the already awful reputation of mentors.

The vast majority of Mentors go in with good intentions and do the job right, players simply remember the worst ones more.

That this was enough to ruin the reputation of all mentors and for it to become a consensus is both sad and terrifying.
