Scheduled Maintenance too early for PST.

I work for a software company and we have licensing servers that our product has to check in with to verify it's activation in real time with every use. Our customers are world wide so we choose to do server maintenance during times with the least traffic and it is not convenient for us at all. But it's company policy to reduce downtime as much as possible for as many customers as possible. /shrug

That's the unusual part for me, too. Something you understand working in IT is that you'll often have to work outside business hours. Unless our customer-facing system is already inaccessible to customers and so we need to do something as an emergency, we always do hotfixes and maintenance in off-hours. Usually this is fairly late US time since we have customers around the world. So it seems a bit counter-intuitive that not only would they work on it during normal business hours, but the main hours for their home base players in Japan, too. Maintenance in my experience has never been at the convenience of the maintenance team. We're the last ones considered, lol.

A lot of times we have to work on server operations during 'off-peak' hours, for some that may mean the graveyard shift. If you look at this maintenance window, this is an entire JP daylight work shift, so this likely well-planned if they had do 9 hours, do it during the work day so they can actually work on it instead of changing shifts around. Plus the last several offline windows were on JP evenings.

The regions aren't completely separate.

if you were hard locked to your region, and they were separate, like say, World of Warcraft, then maybe I could see separate maintenance windows.

But they're not, so we get to do it when it's convenient for the Japanese.

There's plenty of other stuff to do. Go clean the house or something.

I work for a multi billion-dollar International software company that does just that. We cater our server maintenances to non peak times based on region. It is part of a service. Doing maintenance during peak times is unacceptable in this day. Why you have flexible employees.

I understand where you're coming from, but my thought is that maintenance is more important than my play schedule, ergo, I adjust.

Exactly. Their game, their rules, I have no problem conforming to what they want to do. I am not the most important person here; this game wasn't even developed in my country. I'd feel a bit, I dunno - embarrassed? - claiming their schedule was putting me out.

MMO peak hours aren't working hours, they're evenings. So this is being done in off-peak hours for Japanese players.
