I like Rouge/Ninja for both the gameplay and the flavor. But the gameplay and the flavor don't quite match (ludonarrative dissonance).

The Rouge and Ninja NPCs do a lot of reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, infiltration, exfiltration and such, staying covert whenever possible, dressing in the clothes of the common man, using their twin blades and ninjutsu as a last resort.

The Ninja as a DPS job, wearing exotic armor from the East, opens with some impressive magick, and then quickly strikes foe in their face with a ridiculous amount of tumbling and hand signs, followed by the inexplicable appearance of a giant fire-belching red frog that would be hard to miss from a malm away.

Though perhaps this says more about the Warrior of Light's confidence/eagerness for battles/lack of concern of their own safety, and their preference for audacity. Who needs subtlety when you have the Echo, anyway?

I was mistaken when I became a ninja, gone was the thematic stabbery and subterfuge, now I am a battle caster akin to a mage, doing big explosions, lightning bolts, bursts of ice and misty waters. I didn't want to be a mage, I wanted a class with one or two daggers, that did things with those daggers, maybe got some dashing attacks, positionals, more ways to get into stealth in combat. I was really enjoying everything that rogue was doing up until I got to the 30's and ninja happened.

I understand from looking into the games history there was once thoughts of multiple jobs per class but that was dumped after a bad experience when trying to implement it on a mage class.

Now, instead of giving me a history lesson on why that can't be implemented, or that rogue becomes ninja in ff1, can someone please tell me which class is a lightly armored non mage, that doesn't do any magery, with fun positionals just a melee rotation to learn. If I can't trust rogue to not do magic I'm afraid to just blindly level something else hoping for a mechanic I will like.
You’ll have to understand not every archetype job/class follows the trending principles of what they ought to be, especially on a different setting on a fictional world such as other fictional MMOs/films.

If you’re coming from WoW’s background then I can truly empathize with you to a certain degree. While “culture shock” it may seem, keep in mind you cannot apply the same principles if your expectations of what it ought to be based on coming from a firm mindset in which you’re adjusted to based on any game you’ve play before this one ((be it WoW, GW2 etc,.)).

Try to embrace and yearn more of how different it is & how it molds with FFXIV, otherwise try out a different job & you might be surprise you’ll end up liking it more.

    Happened to me,

Back in WoW only did Mage DPS & was never comfortable to try out tanking up until this game & frankly I love it very much & came to appreciate as to how it is.

    Best of luck in Eorzea!

I'd say it would be much cooler to sneak into the enemy camp, dropping some poison into their food and vanishing to win without a fight, rather than falling from the sky with the most flamboyant light show as the "master of subterfuge" explodes everyone. Might as well get a trumpet fanfare to go with the not-so-subtle entrance. Not to mention that you never try to even the odds before you're discovered, since it wouldn't be as heroic to win without a fight.

Perfect example of how story telling is completely at odds with how things actually work.

I thought the rogue rotation was pretty boring, but that's just me. a rogue-like 30-80 job would be neat and good though, I'm seeing in some of these posts there's a thief coming, I don't know if that's true but that'd be good even if it's limited.

this game is great, but nothing is perfect and there will be personal flaws we all dislike. Mine being how I really really wanted to be a Machinist, I even boosted my rogue/ninja as soon as I turned 30 just to skip all the content that was required before becoming a MCH, it was just too much and I just wanted to play a specific class, I found no interest in any of the starter classes (up till now), and I highly regret doing that boost, cause I may never know what goes on, cause alts are pointless and new game+ is pointless if it's unrewarding.

I love gun classes but MCH gameplay 30-38 has been awfully boring, and videos of higher levels don't look any better. Would be great if we saw a class that had multiple variations of weapons, explosive/power amped/bullet all together like my favorite gun class in an old MMO I played Lunia... but MCH here.. all you mostly need to do is spam spread shot as it does similar/same damage as all your single target attacks, so.. it's not that great.

There are in game reasons for how rogue 'evolved' to be ninjas.

Like they invited doma clan to teach them in MSQ or something like that.

And all the rogue skills you still get to keep them when you are ninja.

Unlike White Mage, in which the game literally forcefully make you ditch stone and aero and whatever else damage wise you have learnt as a conjurer and turn them into... holy magic?

It's a melee job that spends way too much time doing things that don't involve actually hitting the enemy with its primary melee weapon - in this case, daggers. You don't see samurais picking their noses constantly with some need to cycle a dull little combo of ludicrous poses.

You may have fortunately or unfortunately got into NIN too late. Fortunate in that you can't miss when it was more rogue like. Back in ARR and HW, NIN still had many of the rogue-ish skills (still miss mutilate ;_; ) and was more focused on being the fast melee class. Unfortunately, a couple more expansions later and a rework that was never needed saw most of Rogue's unique skills deleted, the job massively slowed down, and turned into 50% melee, 50% caster.

I personally switched to Monk to get back to that up close and fast combat. And thank goodness for glamour because sometimes MNK gear is.. questionable in looks.

Ninja should have daily quests, just like dungeons, for using mug, and stealing things and stealth. Other than that, im happy with ninja, besides a thief compared to ninja its like hen stealers, while ninja are professional spies, also they have a code that diference them from thieves. thieves are sprouds, ninjas are pro!!
Square could get inspiration from eso, with thieves guild missions.
