You can list all the compatability fixes, emulators, you name it, but nothing is prefect and you'll always run into issues where you have to spend some time (and a few headaches) to get things working on Linux.
Trust me. I've tried Linux in the past and I don't want to deal with that anymore. It's really sad to say, because I don't really like Microsoft and Apple is infinitely worse, but both of those options are better.
SE could make a Linux version of FF14. Then it would be not a big problem to play FF14 on Steam Deck.
Cheers
You should be able to since they said you will be able to install windows on it.
Proton is getting there. You can list all the compatability fixes, emulators, you name it, but nothing is prefect and you'll always run into issues where you have to spend some time (and a few headaches) to get things working on Linux.

The biggest issue in Linux is the lack of standardisation when it comes to games and stuff Where on Windows everything is the standard directx linux doesn't have that. Which is what protons objective is.
So whether you run debian Ubuntu, fedora or any other distro proton should eventually work if it ever gets standardised.
That would beba big step for Linux as a whole as standardisation would fix so many of the Linux issues.
The steam deck should run xiv though perhaps not at maximum settings bit then itsnonly a 720p screen so you wouldn't really need them..
Things like the gpd win and aya neo run on a similar principle. You can play some of the latest games on those with the settings turned down. But on the smaller screen at 720p it works pretty well.

Can it run non-steam games? I don't have steam FFXIV, nor do I the intention to (if I like a company I prefer to buy from their source). Or perhaps streaming services, if you had like xbox ultimate or what have you.
Could be cool, could be a fancy paperweight. .
Comfortably playing FFXIV on the couch, or some other game, while the wife does another on the TV could be pretty neat.
I want to note, similar to what I said in the CE threads a while back, such a system like valve is using is what I hope FFXIV does in the future for physical concepts. Reselling is a thing and I don't believe it's going to stop anytime soon, in-built systems should be standard practice these days. Naturally you'll have to open the gates, in this example it's only 48 hours.
Seriously, who wants to play an MMO on a handheld? Sure it looks nice and may be good enough to run some cool games. But handhelds in general are more for stuff like Facebook Games, Tetris, Bomberman or Mobile Games if you can use the Touchscreen. But for everything serious PC will be always the way to go.
In my mind I'd be crafting, gathering, doing some really easy battle content (beast tribes for example), etc. Nothing that's hard and needs quick accurate responses, but there is a load in the game that doesn't need that.Seriously, who wants to play an MMO on a handheld? “On Steam Deck, your games run on a different operating system than the one on your desktop PC. It’s a new version of SteamOS, built with Steam Deck in mind and optimized for a handheld gaming experience.” The new version of SteamOS features Proton, which is a compatibility layer that will aid in running games without the need of new ports. Valve states that it will work with vendors to improve anti-cheat solutions through Proton.“

Sure but even if you gather and stuff like that, the screen looks pretty small. Gathering maybe ok if you can use the touch screen but what about combat? From what the device looks like hot bars will be pretty small and i guess you will hit the wrong action from time to time. If you seriously want to use something else than your PC why not buy a Laptob thats good enough for gaming or a windows tablet? The surface series from microsoft is pretty good and more than enough to run games with low requirements and you can add a mouse and real keyboard which makes it perfect for holiday.
