Realistically if you have an 18+ server then the worst kinds of players will tend to gravitate there and use it as an excuse to act negatively, while I have nothing against swearing when you remove the 'their may be children' excuse to sensor people they tend to go off the rails saying things along the lines of 'I can say what the /// I like, there are no /// children here so what /// excuse do you have to tell me what the /// to do?'.
While the vast majority of players are mature enough not to act that way my experience is that as soon as you remove 'kiddie locks' the first people to go beserk and ruin it for everyone are those above the age gate. I'd like to think the FFXIV community is mature enough not to have such individuals but the reality is that we've seen in these very forums how offensive and offended people can get and I'd rather not see that in the chat box while I'm playing.
Maybe I'm pessimistic but I prefer to think of myself as a realist.
I was thinking more along the lines of a adult themed area which the content for this area could vary depending on what the devs see fit to add.
there are ways to check age if you try hard enough.
Keep in mind this popped into my head as a joke and all I am putting forth here is the idea of a adult room not the details. The details of said room can't really be worked out by someone like me since I don't know the laws or the regulations regarding this kind of thing.
I've dealt with a game that had a different server for 18+ only and a server for everyone. The 18+ server was the same as the all server except there was adult content on the 18+ server. The adult content wasn't even something you really ran into unless you were looking for it.Realistically if you have an 18+ server then the worst kinds of players will tend to gravitate there and use it as an excuse to act negatively, while I have nothing against swearing when you remove the 'their may be children' excuse to sensor people they tend to go off the rails saying things along the lines of 'I can say what the /// I like, there are no /// children here so what /// excuse do you have to tell me what the /// to do?'.

I don't think this is necessary or plausible. Though there are some dark parts in a lot of the Final Fantasy titles, for the most part, they are geared towards the crowd that is capable of understanding the content, which is almost everyone.
XI also had some gambling between the NPCs implemented in Lower Jeuno, then of course the Mog Bonanza that happens once in a while.I don't think the rating would change if characters were allowed to consume beverages with alcoholic names or for simulated gambling.
(looking at Rift for the alcoholic beverages)
(looking at Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy 13-2 for the simulated gambling)
BUT if the effects of alcoholic beverages, hallucinogens, or other drugs are introduced, that would hijack the rating to M.
As far as functioning alcohol in an MMO goes, WoW has it.
- Your screen becomes blurry
- You can't run in a straight line
- Your character will "struggle" with swimming and will lose a bit of control while flying
- Your text will become slurred/altered. ("What's up?" could be turned in to "What'sh up? ...hic!")
- Monster levels appear lower than they really are
- Drinking too much causes your character to vomit
Last I checked, there isn't a M rating slapped on to it.
Eh, you're confusing 18+ content with PvP content. PvP servers tend to attract immature people that like to swear from my experience.
I think that one made my day, nice one, Blizzard XD

Pokemon had casinos....
The main problem here, to me, is... asking whether someone on the internet is of age 18+ is totally reliable and verifiable. /eyeroll
I am 12 and what is this?
Oh god I sucks, lame and old joke...universitiy is too boring.
I don´t think adding a 18+ server is a good idea. People tend to take the arm when you offer the hand, if you know what I mean. There would be people who just take advantage of the 18+ label and start acting like...well...children!
And besides, falsification of one age is easy sadly and childrens just like to break the law....
