So yea, I completely get why no one uses essences.
This patch, the number of DR runs to complete the Timeworn step of a Relic has been cut down from 15 to 5. At the same time the cost of Pure Essence fragments (the good ones) has been cut from 3 Clusters to 1. This is massive, 20 minutes cluster farming would probably net you enough to finish multiple relics.

There is absolutely zero excuse now.
