Right, I meant "discard" as "discard and use a new one", not as "do like Cher." I was gonna add a little ramble about how a Viera could choose the name of the city they first arrive to or which they choose as their new "home" as their new surname but... forgot (plus, it feels too head-canon-y). The whole "you could choose whatever, you're an exile anyway. Or you can keep your Forest name, that's cool, too." thing feels... complicated.

Technically retaining your forest name comes within "choose whatever", right? Because now they're choosing it instead of being given it at birth, or something. Who's going to come from the village to tell them off?

Maybe that's why Fran's surname is spelt differently. Change a letter, now it's not the same thing.
