Since this will be critically important in the post-6.0 world, what's Icelandic for "Waffle" and can it be twisted into something lore-appropriate?

I can't help you on the translation but it is 100% lore-accurate if you want it to be.

In practice, however, one will rarely encounter a Viera using her forest name, as those who choose to leave their homes and strike out into the wider world will generally choose new “city names” for themselves to mark their parting from the traditional Viera way of life. These chosen names are often inspired by the names of other races they encounter, or simply things that they like, such as “Cherry” or “Morning Glory,” and so vary widely between individuals.

I was bored and started going through Viera-related threads.

Apparently it's "Vöfflu", which in a Linguistic-aside-ramble came from the (Middle) Dutch "Wafel", and refers to a "honeycomb", likely because of the square pattern (although did they just NOT think of making them with an actual honeycomb pattern?). This is likely because nouns don't tend to change THAT much between vaguely-related-languages (and English basically pickpockets other languages in search of loose words and grammar), especially when food items are concerned (by which I mean, pasta, certain types of cakes, tacos..., not, like, how Orange in Swedish is Apelsin or "Pome de terre"/"Ground apple" is French for Potato... ingredients are weird like that) we tend to use the "original" name or translate it to our language's proper grammatical rules.

As Iscah pointed out, "Waffle" would actually be 100% Lore Appropriate given we have "Cherry" and "Morning Glory" as city names (avoiding ANOTHER rant about those), but for a Forest name, I think Vöfflu would be kiiind of correct. However, even the Viera Naming Conventions thread mentions Viera Forest names "resemble" Icelandic and are pronounced "similarly"(most likely as a way to cover their behind should they goof, or to include not-perfectly-complying names like "Ruuj", which is meant to be phonetically similar to "Rouge", given that said name comes from Tactics A2 Clan "Cinquleur" member... Ruuj, a RED Mage), so feel free to change what's needed for character purposes.

(Also completely aside but ADD flares up and I forget but I've been meaning to apologize to Fenral because I was likely dismissive of G'raha coming back way back in 3.x, I was so sure they would NEVER make side-content necessary for MSQ which just shows how much I know about this game's writing, my predictions have been 0 to... 30)

Back on Topic, I wonder if and how the Viera Naming Conventions pinned post will update closer to Endwalker release. I'm glad Samniel Atkascha is already (headcanonly) an alias or at least an assumed name, but maybe I will actually make Mrjn an alt, his backstory's been rattling in my head since before 5.0 release.

My login streak lapsed, so I couldn't respond to this in a timely manner even though I logged in again days ago. Thanks, WoW-pocalypse.

That is good to know. I could probably shorten it to "Vofl" and not be too far off.

Apparently, the original plan was to leave him in storage until a second MSQ reset happened, rendering all the old content unplayable again, so we were technically both right. Then Heavensward hit like a bomb and it became in their best interests to not cut off old content, I guess. I'm just satisfied that no crimes against Conservation of Detail were intended. Either way, it was basically half a decade ago, and, I mean, I was going through an IRL lot at the time and hardly the most mature or likeable person about the whole thing, but okay, apology accepted. /blush

Looking at the dates, it usually happens a couple weeks to a month after official launch for expansion races, so we'll have access to the in-game name generator first.
