Looking at his answers, it seems that it's based on irl bunnies to an extend, since they are indistinguishable until they're ready to mate, too. That's an interesting society indeed.

Ah, so the speculation that it has to do with certain body parts and how or when they manifest was correct. Considering that humans don't become distinctive until puberty either, when hormones kick in, it was always odd to me, but now it's clearer as to why. So the way I am reading it is that their sex is determined at birth (biologically) but isn't apparent; there are no cultural differences between them until puberty but after that point, and certainly once they're paired with a mentor, it all changes.
When the game's story becomes self-aware:

How they can't see the difference down there when they're young? Are they just barbie dolls there then when they're 20 suddenly something sprouts?
But if they're so indistinguishable from females, it makes sense how their faces look so similar ingame. Also would make sense if they have similar heights.

20 is their coming of age, which isn't equal to puberty (in case if it was confusing, his answers about puberty and 20 years are unrelated to each other, those are two different points). ~20 is when they're considered adults (which is also the age of coming in Japan, so I can see why Matsuno picked this). That said, puberty is more likely closer to human's 11-16 years (it was said somewhere earlier that it's around 13? likely still stands this way). How they can't see the difference down there when they're young? As to how they're indistinguishable even when naked... some mammals are, infact, indistinguishable until their maturity (including bunnies), so maybe it's the case here as well. I would assume that changes start first inside their body and then become apparent outside as well. Maybe they do have a hole or something that is later developed into their secondary characteristics, but it's hard to guess further than that without more info honestly (and I'm not even sure it's a proper topic for forums).

20 is when their apparent age remains the same till hundreds of years, puberty is before that, but yeah that's pretty much what's implied tbh, or perhaps it's really... small and similar to the other. How they can't see the difference down there when they're young? None of this lore really goes against what we already knew which stated their puberty to be around 13, so maybe that still stands.
Interesting. So, I'm guessing that the Viera from the Ivalice universe share common things with the Viera of FFXIV, right? I know that the two clans of the Viera race had the same skin colorations and etc while the clans in the FFXIV universe have different skin tones. It does makes me wonder if the hair colorations of the viera in the FFXIV universe is natural or dyed because they're the latter in XXII according to the manual of the game back in 2006 which their natural hair color is white or silver but dye their hair when living in human settlements. Judging from some people here told me, it's likely the former and not the latter. Some additional lore on male Viera from Matsuno (which was translated by Reddit Discord team by my request and you can find it in their translation and live letters channel):

Hope we get a benchmark with the option to create Bunnyboi's but that seems unlikely.
Couldn't the developers just tell us the height scale range? I dont think its too much to ask for ahead of time to know.

I don't see why they wouldn't. Haven't the last 2 Benchmarks allowed us to make or import a character for the test? I'll admit I don't really remember the SB one too clearly now, but I could have sworn it also had that option![]()

All of them have. Gotta have OUR character in the benchmark movies after all!
