Their purpose? They look like food to me...

4. Part of the planet was sent into Orbit, along with where Zodiark, and so Ancient architecture isn't out of place. Lopporits were part of that new seeded life that got sent there by mistake.I assume they were created by the same Amaurotines who fashioned the structures on the moon to possibly to serve as helpers in the absence of fellow Ancients.
The thing I'm more curious about is that prior lore suggested the moon was created specifically when Zodiark was imprisoned, which would mean that either:
1. The buildings and the Loppurets were made just before the Sundering happened and that the moon was fashioned before Zodiark got shoved into it, which would suggest there's some deeper conspiracy surrounding the Sundering.
2. The moon had always existed and some ambitious Amaurotines decided to establish a colony up there for whatever reason.
3. The buildings were actually made post-sundering by the unsundered Ascians for some unknown purpose.
Part of the Source being up there would make sense in a way. We have a lot of areas of the planet like the chasm under Ishgard that can't sustain life, almost like something that is supposed to be there is not there. Since we saw the WoL kill one of the Terminus there at the end of the trailer, I suspect it may be the "cancerous" parts of the planet that had the biggest corruptions from the Sound. Sound can't travel in space after all, it'd be the perfect way to shut it down. Add into it the cleaving of the world into 14 copies, and it also severely limits the power of the corruption still remaining, allowing for easy eradication.
I could see it being similar to the Thea theory. Thea crashed into the earth, and then formed the Earth we know and the moon with it. Perhaps somehow the source itself split apart into two.
The text in french localization seems more detailed. ( i dunno how to add a screenshot ><)
here the translation, it may be confusing, i'm not confident in my english XD
"According to some, he is a survivor of the people of the moon. What is certain is that he cannot give nicknames to everyone he meets on his way. He never goes out without his book in he records all these new names."
This one may be canon, i guess?
If that was the case, though, then you'd imagine that three un-sundered ascians would've been enough to destroy it a long time ago.Part of the Source being up there would make sense in a way. I would think the buildings on the moon would be where Elidibus spends most of his time when he's on the Source. And the Loppurets are his servants that he created to keep him company. They look the way they do because Elidibus was still young. At least I think this. It would explain how they got there in the first place. Of course, Option B was that the Allagans introduced them.
This was my interpretation as well.
Though I have a crazy theory that the Lops are Amaurotines that somehow managed to survive and since degenerated and/or evolved in to space bunnies.
