We have a lot of areas of the planet like the chasm under Ishgard that can't sustain life, almost like something that is supposed to be there is not there. Since we saw the WoL kill one of the Terminus there at the end of the trailer, I suspect it may be the "cancerous" parts of the planet that had the biggest corruptions from the Sound. Sound can't travel in space after all, it'd be the perfect way to shut it down. Add into it the cleaving of the world into 14 copies, and it also severely limits the power of the corruption still remaining, allowing for easy eradication.
If that was the case, though, then you'd imagine that three un-sundered ascians would've been enough to destroy it a long time ago.
