It is possible that the Zenos thing is a red herring, but considering the big deal they're making of him picking out a new weapon, and the general timing, I'd be surprised if it's not the weapon from the new job.

Agreed - the whole "the new weapon is going to be a scythe and Zenos is going to use it" theory doesn't add up with the animation in that scene at all.We will see. The straight draw angle of the way Zenos's pulled his mystery weapon out of the ground and the sound effect when he pulled seemed more like a straight bladed weapon than a scythe. A scythe would also have been embedded into the ground on a curve and the pole would have been visible. They might have just recycled some animations but the way he pulled that thing out of ground was more in line with a sword then anything else.
Looking for a new weapon might mean he's taking on the new playable job, but there's an equal chance he's moving up to a unique job regardless of what the players are getting.

this picture is off of reddit but... i'm 90% sure youre right. I looked at the scene in EW where we see the supposed scythe and it literally doesn't look like a scythe at all.Agreed - the whole "the new weapon is going to be a scythe and Zenos is going to use it" theory doesn't add up with the animation in that scene at all.

Also! I just drew up what I've been thinking this entire time:
I could be wrong, entirely. But it looks like that part of the "scythe" people are seeing is actually just... part of the structure in the back of his chair.

That isn't the only thing I noticed now that you highlighted it. Zenos's weapon has a curved, flared handle indicating it is to be gripped near the end. That is not the handle of a polearm, they are gripped in the center. That kind of handle is typical of scimitars:
It is also the kind of handle found on early muskets and Garlean gunblades:

Yep! it makes a lot of sense for zenos to pick up the garlean gunblade. This isn't to say we won't get a scythe wielder! Just means Zenos probably won't be the scythe wielder if we do get that kind of job. That isn't the only thing I noticed now that you highlighted it. Everything in that picture is some varying shade of orange/black, because of the fire. Zenos’ hair also matches the color you pointed out.
What’s throwing people off and leading them to believe it’s a weapon and not part of the chair is that the chair is otherwise symmetrical except for that part of it.

Zenos' hair is the first color, the chair is the second and the mistaken scythe is the 3rd. Allowing for pixel variations (its a screenshot of a compressed video, of course there's going to be pixel variations) the two colors that more closely match are straight-up orange, whereas Zenos' hair is a true yellow.

Why'd they highlight one of the chair arms? That whole thing isn't a weapon, the majority of that is one of the arms of his chair, and duplicated on the other side.
Anyway, I think it's not propped up against the chair with the blade at the top. I bet that's the hilt/bottom of the weapon, and he'll stand up or something and pull the blade up from where his feet would be.
