This is exactly what I think too. Dungeons as they are now are such a chore. If they want to cater to casual/underperforming players, they could make them 8-players and harder.Yoshida's response about challenging 4p content is infuriating to be quite honest.
I really hate how they want every 4p content ever to be DF-friendly because "there are a lot of casual players" as he puts it. No one is asking them to do harder dungeons INSTEAD of the usual easy ones.
It's not like players have been managing to form parties to take on challenging EIGHT player content for over 8 years or anything... Hell if he thinks 4 is too little, why not just make it 8? People only hate CM and Praetorium because of the cutscenes.
I'd take harder but not "savage" level dungeons too. Anything. Dungeons used to be my favorite kind of content. Now I find them so boring I stopped doing expert roulettes...
I don't care if this is an unpopular take but large scale content is a mess. I couldn't care less. Even the Ivalice ones felt more like being carried by a current than actually engaging.
So... back to summons just being one-time big damage spells? Because that's what they were in most games from FF4-FF9, and to a lesser degree in 12 and 13
You'd still need something else to do between summoning in the creatures to do their big damage effects.
I play SMN as an alt-job so it's never been my main. But I do have it at 80 and in ilvl 516 gear. I really enjoy the gameplay because of its mobility and hard-hitting spells. I love running dungeons and raids on it because I can run around avoiding AoE while my dots continue to tick and my pet continues to attack. All while nuking instacasts like Ruin 2 and Fester/Painflare.
In dungeons stuff dies REALLY, REALLY FAST. Summoner AoE is ridiculous. As one poster on here put it, "they bloody melt mobs!" The only reason I don't main it is because RDM/BLM will always be my first loves, so to speak. And I enjoy those jobs the most.
So, I'm just curious what's broken about them. Does Yoshi mean they are at a breaking point because they are so OP? Or does the job really underperform in savage/extreme content?
I'm guessing the job is moving away from the orginal design. Not that it being OP per se, that's what balance is there for.
Not a summoner so my opinion might not carry as much weight but I'd be cool with having the filler attacks be primal themed and getting rid of the egis all-together. I'm doubly biased though I don't play summoner and I generally don't like pet classes in games.
Edit: By filler attacks I mean ruin and whatever else SMN currently uses as filler
I was a huge fan of ffxi summoner mechanics wonder what this overhaul will bring
I didn't necessarily mind them not adding more egi glams over the years, but I am still BAFFLED that they never threw together a simple UI for it instead of relying on text commands.
Perhaps in large numbers they can achieve this, but full agree. It would be amazing if they can make it easy to get in but still have some semblance of engaging challenge. I feel some of the raids had specific bosses that had that occasionally, and with even more people perhaps it'll allow them the leeway Yoshida mentioned as useful. But definitely a key thing to me is ease getting in. Absolute major turn off to gameplay is having to sit on my hands begging and or praying to get into content. Done with that already in FFXI lol, I've no more room for tolerance- it was already spent and it is not coming back XD. (Although hopefully they preplan solutions when the content gets less popular, I hate seeing content opportunities die- if it's nerfs or if it's AI buddies to help fill slots, whatever).

This sounds like they're getting rid of pets...."Currently summoner as a job is reaching somewhat of a breaking point when it comes to the
overall play mechanics, so we’ve halted work on Egi glamour for the time being in order to shift
focus. There is a reason behind this, but we can’t share the details with you at the moment.
When the time comes, I’ll be sure to properly share that information with everyone."
Very curious. Is this the overhaul I've been waiting for? I hope so.
