Imagine playing with someone that is going through ARR.
"Wait, why are you summoning Moenbryda, Haurchefant and Papalymo's souls?!"
Whoops!

The most you are likely going to get for a job to tie into the MSQ is along the lines of Estinien in the ARR Dragoon quests and his subsequent role in the MSQ of Heavensward. You have a few sentences of dialog changed to indicate you and Estinien already met and have a history. Also scythes are not the tool associated with a shepherd; that would be a crook. Scythes are associated with farmers and harvests.my theory is that the job might have something to do with Azem. Perhaps flash of memories being awakened from being in a certain place and observing something, leading to key interest like some parts of Eorzea and the Azim Steppe for the pre-81 level quest and for post 80 stuff after we get Azem's star we get a job quest giver in the form of Emet (in the same vein as Hythlodious in that they are a mere memory fragment with a set purpose to perform). I think it be a cool way to give us story on Azem and the convocation leading up to the fight against Zodiark.
I also think the weapon will be a scythe which seems to be the common guess. Which would make sense due to the reaper and Azem being portrayed as shepherds in real world lore for reaper and in game lore for Azem. Plus it does seem a lot like we called forth Emet temporarily from the aetherial sea to help us during a big fight by using the stone.
It be cool if the gimmick of the class was to call forth lost souls, the ones we failed to save during our adventure (like Moenbryda, Haucherfant, and Emet to name a couple) that would jump for a duration to help us fight.

There's no chance of them introducing a new job so dependent on MSQ. The jobs will be available in one of the three starting cities with no MSQ requirement like all the jobs from Stormblood and Shadowbringers and the introductory stories will make sense with no MSQ knowledge required. The questgivers will not be anyone involved in the MSQ because that would add the possibility of out-of-order interactions with characters.my theory is that the job might have something to do with Azem. We're not in ARR/HW anymore. They have made clear design decisions since then that they're going to stick to.
Would be funny if after all this discussion we get bamboozled again like we did with apothecary/chemist and sage

And for many reasons. It would be the first time we'd have a shirt that much straightforward.
Batman -> The Dark Knight -> Dark knight.
Scarlet Witch -> Redmage (and not witch!)
Spiderman - Sam Raimi -> Samurai
And this time it would be Reaper -> Reaper?
Another problem is that both Zenos and Ran'jit are not PC models, they're simply "monsters" models.
And again another problem is that current Zenos and Ran'jit are not wearing heavy armors like dragoon.
There's so many problems such as "Why reaper?" the job doesn't exist in previous games, only ONE character in FFT. Gunbreaker put a name on Squall's job.
But Reaper? Where does that come from and why should it be the next job?
9 Days to wait for a reaper job with good explanation or to bamboozle more than half of the community.

Honestly, even if Scythe is the weapon to avoid repeatinng something like swords etc. "Reaper" won't be the job's name, and I doubt it'd be that tied to death or necromancy in any way.
Could very well be a Mystic Knight using a scythe forged with Thavnairian stuff to increase aether conductivity so it can channel spells.

More then likely this next melee job is going to originate in some nation's military. Look at the classes that currently wear medium-heavy armor in the game (fending and maiming gear):

- Gladiator: Basic infantry of the Ul'dah Army and mercenary groups based out of Ul'dah
- Paladin: Royal Guard of the Ul'dah Sultanate
- Warrior / Marauder: Shock infantry of the Limsan Army
- Dark Knight: Vigilante order that grew out of the Ishgirdian Army, specifically the Temple Knights
- Gunbreaker: Soldiers of the Brozjan Royal Guard
- Lancer: Main line infantry of the Gridanian Army
- Dragoon: Elite anti-dragon soldiers of the Ishgirdian Army
It is not the kind of stuff mystics wear. Also Grim Reaper and skull-and-bone imagery has been quite popular among the insignia of real world military units for a long time. It was especially popular among many real-world cavalry units; especially hussar, lancer and dragoon units.

How likely is it that they add another tank as a surprise since it's the last expansion of this story?

I think that a tank will be added the next expansion after Endwalker. They seem to have a pattern to how they are adding classes with the expansions:
- Dark Knight: Tank
- Machinist: Ranged DPS
- Astrologian: Healer
- Samurai: Melee DPS
- Red Mage: Caster DPS
- Gunbreaker: Tank
- Dancer: Ranged DPS
- Sage: Healer
- Grim Reaper Shirt Class: Melee DPS
If that pattern holds we should be seeing a tank and a caster DPS next expansion after Endwalker.
