I really don't like the gaming community in f2p. Open to everyone well, means OPEN TO EVERYONE, every last retard on the planet. No thank you. Even guild wars manages to attract less lazy stupid people by simple charging for the base game, but with FFXIV, that might not be enough. I would straight up quit this game if micro transactions that enhance your character in some way are massively introduced. (one time limited edition kind of thing, thats fine, cash shop= just no)

While I don't like the Idea of F2P, a hybrid type might work. I think Lord of the Rings uses a hybrid system.

Subscribers pay a monthly fee and have access to the whole game.

Free to players have access to basic parts of the game, and have to pay for content unlocks.

I think *IF* SE ever decides to go that route a hybrid solution would be the best.

hypothetical example of how F2P *COULD* work in XIV post 1.21: (Free to play players pay per content, Subscribers get everything with their sub fee)

Instanced dungeons: $5.00 per unlock (x4 dungeons = $20.00 total)
Primal fights $3.00 per unlock ($6.00 for moogle and ifrit)
Advanced jobs $5.00 per job (Paladin, Dragoon,White mage ect ect) ($35.00 for all 7 jobs)
Anima recharge $1.00 per 100 anima
personal Chocobo $10.00
Main story unlock $10.00
7th umbral era story $10.00
Access to Inn $8.00
Retainers $5.00 each
Airship passport $10.00

However is you pay your monthly dues all that comes with the sub fee.

Like TheVedis said, F2P comes with a price, but that price is dependent on what you want out of the game. Of course you'll get in the dilemma of subscribers and non-subscribers coming together and the non-subber not having access to certain content, but all they have to do is open their wallet.

*IF* FFXIV ever adopts a F2P model I hope they choose a hybrid over straight F2P.

Making this game F2P is the only thing that can make me quit. I do not mind one time offers like they had in FFXI, but no real cash shop or something crazy like that.

They go F2P and I leave. I played enough F2P games and I'm not doing it again.
As other people said, everyone and their mom will play the game if it's F2P, meaning more trolls/a-holes since being ingame doesn't cost anything. P2P lose that appeal to most of those people because of having to pay.

Another thing is endgame content becoming impossible to do without struggling (if not impossible) if you don't buy items from the cash shop (HP/MP charms, etc). It also skews the balance between the players who are able to spend large sums of money and those who cant, examples include buying stacks of raw material, items guaranteeing forbidden materia craft success etc.

that is what he said, every p2p mmorpg will be f2p in some point, let it be 10 years later or 5 years later. So chill out, if the game is good at 2.0 then it will not go f2p until it getting very old and a new FF online come out

Oh dear...here we go again...

I'll reiterate what I have posted in the past...there's a certain free to play game that if you wanted to max out your character you could easily spend $20,000...and each time new gear is introduced to get the new gear up to date you could spend another $2000.

Said game also made random chests you can buy in the cash shop to win a mount. Peoples spent some $2000 and didn't get mount. Cried foul...

I dunno about you people but I don't have that kind of money to play a game. Nor would I enjoy playing with an elitist rich person that then spends that much and runs around to rub it in my face. It's also a well known way to get people with hoarding disorders to do it in the digital realm. Those that have addictions tendencies would be drawn to hoard by buying uncontrollably through cash shops.

For all you whiners about subscriptions. SUBs are very very cheap way to enjoy a game. You lose so much going F2P...IT should only be considered if a game is no longer producing content and wants to earn money towards the end of it's lifespan.

F2P MAJOR DISADVANTAGES:
- Imbalances in gameplay
- Community suffers from trolling/poor quality players
- Gotta pay for items and content
- It actually costs MORE!!

I have no issues with PURE vanity items going pay to get...but F2P brings in a bad community. Look how awful servers were when we had no subscriptions. Yes there were more players but I didn't really care for most of the peeps. They weren't enjoyable to play with. They whined all the time. Now with SUBs you got people that just wanna play the game.

I'm not really adverse to the game going free to play, one of the reasons I originally started playing was because, at the time, there was no subsciption. That said I am happy paying for the game and if they need to charge to keep it running and keep releasing content then I'm all for that.

The one thing I do want changed is the way multiple characters is handled, I wouldn't mind paying to unlock a new character slot but the monthly charge is a kick in the balls I could do without.
