Meracydia and the New World would serve as solid destinations for an exploration based expansion in 7.0 or beyond. I have a feeling that we may go world hopping again at some point in the future, though. Or go back in time. Apparently FFXI had an expansion involving time travel? I never played it, though.

FFXI had an expansion where we were sucked into an Atomos to 20 years into the past to the world war against the forces of darkness that we almost lost. In FFXIV, other than 1 battle between dragons and Garleans and 1 city being taken over, there's not much going on at a world-wide or even realm-wide scale to warrant a time travel expansion, unless we go back to 5 years ago to the moon crashing that we already experienced.

I'm hoping that 7.0 takes place at least a few years after 6.0 and will act as sort of a reset since the main story will end in 6.0. In FFXI, the main story of each expansion except for the very first one could be started independently of where you were in the overall main story so even new players could take part in new content. Even in that one's case, you could still have access to that expansion's zones and the level ranges were lower in sections of those zones. I think it would help retention rates of new players in the game if you could at least start 7.0 after finishing Praetorium and more of it will unlock depending on where you're at in the MSQ.

As far as where, we have a whole giant continent in the middle of the world we've barely touched and I don't think we're going to even scratch the surface in EW. I'm sure there's going to be a power vacuum after the events of the expansion and a lot of rebuilding to be done, so I think it would be neat if we go in and explore 5 years later, like how ARR was 5 years after Dalamud fell and the recovery.

There are more destinations then that for 7.0. We could go to Hingashi which is the island nation Kugane is apart of. We have all the territories that exist between Garlemald and Othard/Eorzea--which includes Terncliff, Landis, a not war torn Dalmasca/Bozja etc. Plus the new world and modern Meracydia. The Burn is supposed to resupport life at some point, Northern Othard could be explored as it has landmarks beyond the Azim Steppe (there is even a bridge connecting to it but it is just broken now). And finally, more shard hopping as other alternative universes exist in the remaining shards.

And this is all if they don't add something new!

Honestly, I think it'd be really weird if we go to Meracydia before we get to explore Ilsabard as an overworld zone outside of Garlemald's ruins. That seems like prime 7.0 real estate to me. The only way I could see us going to Meracydia before then is if we go in 6.0 since this seems to be the endgame world tour expansion.

I mentioned this in another thread but while playing through the final Werlyt questline i noticed the area the Diamond weapon crashed in was really well detailed for just a throw away zone. While some cutscenes have shown areas not in the game so far like the rebel camp in 5.4, and the Garlean capitol in 5.0. the detail in this zone looked like it had much more effort put into it. That got me thinking that maybe that is because Werlyt proper will be a zone in 6.0. Think about it, Gaius is still there and given how his questline was set up in SB and continued throughout ShB it feels off that he would not be in the 6.0, especially with us going to Garlemald.

The place where Diamond Weapon landed wasn't actually a throwaway zone, it was actually from the Oversoul portion of the Sapphire Weapon fight. Gaius actually handwaves away the fact that it's the same area by talking about how little it's changed.

Which also probably means that the wreck zone is right there on that field, but hidden by the various battle effects and burning ceruleum.

Emerald Weapon, actually, but that's just me being a smartass. (Sapphire Weapon was fought in Terncliff's coastal waters while piloting the G-Warrior.)
