Voice over competition suggestion

Hiya i hope i have posted this in the right section.

So i was thinking i know a lot of people that dont even give this game a go because of so many scenes with no voice and instead of having to pay commercial voice actors us players could actually be a part of the game by having a competition for voice acting like theres competitions for designing content.

Tell me what you guys think.

I don't think they should. Plenty of games have no voice acting at all, and the voice actors we currently have are pretty dang good at what they do.

The same could be said of hairstyles and furniture, but adding to those has made the game better as it would having voice overs in all cutscenes

hairstyles are able to be morphed into ffxiv’s style

voices aren’t. unless you’re suggesting they take the users voice and completely edit it so that it’s so far from the original that it’s not noticeable as the users voice?

The suggestion was for a competition. The "editing" or "morphing" is simply what free labor they accept. What they don't, we can assume was not to XIV's style.

Though I'd add that any such competition should be prefaced with a dialectal phonology guide for the various regions.

if OP didn’t want dissenting opinions they shouldn’t have asked “what do you think”. I think it’s unnecessary and wouldn’t work considering the scope of such a project.

I cannot even imagine how much work would go into making it sound like the dialogue wasn't recorded on thousands of different microphones of varying make and quality.
If we submit a drawing for a contest they rework it and model it and put it into FF14.
... But a sound file?
Do you expect they'll just copy/paste the file right in?

Yeah, as noted there's a big logistical issue with getting quality that's good for that sort of thing. The difference between a home microphone that most people will have, even a good one, and a studio is pretty big. Two, there's a matter of direction. The most recent patch was apparently recorded from the VA's homes without someone directing their performances and it was noticeable. I remembered wondering if a few of the VAs had changed (aside from Matoya who sadly did of course). And the only other option would be send in your recording and then the winner comes to the studio to record, but that wouldn't be very feasible for anyone outside the city in the UK where the studio is located. Would you be expected to make your own way for that or would they pay for it? If they didn't pay, what would they do if you turned it down? They still got dialogue to fill in that case.

With the furniture contest, it's much simpler. You submit a drawing, they pick a drawing they like and then model it. No logistical issues there.

Also there's also the issue where plenty of unvoiced scenes involve characters who already have voices, and they aren't going to replace them with a random person just to avoid paying them.

At no point have I or the OP said there should be no dissenting opinions.

You said the results of any such competition would be impossible to "morph to FFXIV's style", yet that is exactly what every casting decision already does for its respective project.

Admittedly, though, you did not end your comment with "What do you think?" Should I therefore have refrained from pointing out the obvious problem with your claim?

There are plenty of problems with his idea, sure, but that is not one of them; choosing from among options presented, however limited a pool, is exactly how most "styles" are developed. Voices and casting absolutely can be--and, more often than not, are --"morphed" to a project's style in just such a way--by direction and, most importantly, selection.

I see no need for more voice-acting than what we already tend to get unless it's of at least equal quality to what we've been getting, but disagreeing with a illogical warrant is not some denial of any and all dissenting opinions.
