Single sidequests or MSQ quests are fine, though.
While I've always found Aether Currents pointless, since if I want to explore the new arenas. I'll do so at my leisure not when I want to get through the story. In any case, this is what actually irks me. When I'm invested in whatever is going on in the MSQ, the last thing I want to do is deviate to a long side quest chain. All it does is make me compelled to rush through, which is disappointing because I may have otherwise been interested if I chose to do it sometime later when I was out in the world specifically to do side quests. The same can be said about Role Quests. I'm on the cusp of finishing the Emet Selch arc, I really couldn't care less about some cowardice Miqo'te. I know there's way more to that story, but it escapes me at the moment. Which, in a way, echoes my point.

I really thought they were going to better coordinate the ending points of the role quests with the MSQ, what with them being prerequisites for progress. But if you've paced your EXP gain right and you're still at level 79 when you reach Mt Gulg, everything after that should be within the flow of the MSQ. It was not the point where I wanted to disengage from that story and resume the entirely separate role quest story.

It would have flowed much better if the role quest wrapped up at level 78 and you could finalise it before you approached what was pretty clearly the start of the finale.

It wasn't so much about the role quest givers, tho it was to a point. It told the story of ardberts companions. It was fairly story important. Especially if you do all of them.

And I remembered them telling us to keep up with them, so I did XD

It has little bearing on the main story itself, but rather serves as flavor. Considering you only have to do one series, you can't really claim its importance when three other role quests can still there gathering dust. In fact, I still haven't finished two of them. That isn't to say anything about their quality or whatnot. I actually liked the ones I did. It's that when I'm approaching the conclusion of Shadowbringers, my full attention is towards that and I'd rather not take a sharp detour to start/finish a completely separate storyline.

Same! I have a couple zones in Stormblood that I STILL haven't finished.

Going to have to disagree on the importance and relevance of the Role Quests. True I don't care too much about the contacts and their tales. But I do care about Ardberts companions.. we fought them in post-HW, before they returned home with Minfilia to stop the Flood of Light, and now we get to see both what happened before in their lives and what became of them after their clash with us in HW.

I meant important in the sense you're forced to complete one of them. It isn't the story I have any issue with. In fact, I quite like them for the reasons you said. I'd just prefer to enjoy them at my leisure and not abruptly have to stop near the very end of the MSQ to partake in them. When I'm invested in the MSQ, I want to continue forward. And the person I quoted claimed they were important to the MSQ but they can't be since you aren't forced to complete all four. Just one.

They enrich the MSQ but that doesn't mean they need to be required.
