What was your first Final Fantasy?

    Final Fantasy VII

Which Final Fantasy was the first one you finished?

    Final Fantasy VII

Did you explore more of the series afterwards?

Yes. You might say I've become obsessed. I've played Final Fantasys I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VII: Remake*, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XI, XII, XIII, XIII-2, XIII: Lightning Returns, XIV, XV, Crystal Chronicles, Legends I, Legends II, Legends III, Adventure, Type O, World of Final Fantasy, Tactics Advanced (didn't play much of regular Tactics though).

There's probably more not coming to mind.

*why didn't they call it Remako?

Which Final Fantasy carries the most weight in your mind(or lives there rent free)?

Final Fantasy XIV. Given this is FFXIV, maybe I should pick one that isn't XIV. By which point it'd be IX or XI.

For a long time VII was my favourite followed by VIII, but now that I am an adult and not the edgy teen I was, IX took over. Then XI of course was a mess of an MMO by any modern standards, yet IMO it had so much going for it and I loved it, heck I still go back to play. Whilst I always praised XI's story, I feel XIV has surpassed it with ShB.

Care to just gush about your favorite Final Fantasy moments over the years?

Hmm, I really liked Zidane's "You Are Not Alone" sequence and Beatrix's story arc as well as Freyja's (Freyja's was cut too short though). They were all emotional bits to FFIX. And of course the destruction the summons wrought at several parts of the game just brought to light how powerful and terrible they are, for me it's probably the first I saw them carrying that kind of weight that I don't feel was matched until Bahamut showed up in XIV. The Destruction of Cleyra, the attack on Lindblum and of course, the Summoning of Alexander. Then of course, the Answers video for XIV ngl gave me a lot of hype for ARR's release.

There's probably many moments, but I guess they're the ones to come to mind, beyond somebody very obvious ones in Shadowbringers, but out of courtesy I'll not put any spoilers in.

And of course, fighting Kefka in FFVI and Sephiroth in FFVII. And Kuja in IX and Necron - I liked Necron. Sephiroth of course was my first encounter of a final boss in a Final Fantasy, so it was an experience. Kefka of course is grandiose and Dancing Mad is just adds a lot to it, that sadly I was disappointed by FFXIV's version of the fight. And out of Kuja and Necron, it was Necron's fight that hooked me more, although it's this thing that came completely out of left field.

And with IX the whole twist with Terra and Garlond, that concept really interested me. And of course getting to Memoria, it was this whole weird and abstract place and I loved it...it's becoming clear why I put IX down in a previous question.

Btw just want to comment to OP! Good job on an overly wholesome thread man. I’ve seen a lot of salt and arguing, so it’s nice to see some like this where people can gush about their experiences. Would thumbs up more if I could!

Thanks! I just started to wonder about user's here and their history with the Final Fantasy series. A lot of people mention snippets here or there like, "I never played earlier than 8." or, "I'm aging myself here, but..." all in other threads whenever anyone does the trip nostalgic. I got so curious, that I thought I'd go ahead and put the question forward in a thread. It's also interesting to see which Final Fantasies hold interest and which don't, even if it's wildly variable between people. I just like hearing stories from people I guess, heh.

    FF7, FF8, FF9, FFT

Then some things like final fantasy mystic quest and those GBA ones that became mana games...

    FFX, FFIV, FFV, FFVI. FFX-2

Then some DS stuff and FF1,2 and 3

XI, XII, XIII, XIII-2, XIV, XV, XIV again

Beat everything beside 1,2,3,11 and 12. Missed some of the spin offs I think.

Hmm... Had a thing of playing RPGs but never finishing them for a long time. Think the first time I actually finished one was FFIII, on the DS release, which was my first time playing that game in sincerity.

Did you explore more of the series afterwards?
Yeah! I played every game released in America for over a decade... started the first one a few years after it came out but I kept apace after that. I kind of lost interest starting from X and only got to playing the newer games recently.

I don't think FFVII is the best game of all time. I think the story, character, battle systems, and more, are nothing impressive. In my mind, it's not my favourite Final Fantasy. Not even my top five.

But it's hard to deny it is a cultural touchstone for the entire gaming medium. It changed JRPGs, the series, and the public eye of what it could be, forever.

On a personal level though, I got to go with Final Fantasy IV. The storytelling can only really be explained as something of a poetic epic, where the literal and metaphorical alike manifest in the game world. Like, Cecil literally has to ascend Mt Ordeals as a Dark Knight, battle his inner darkness, and only then can he find the light within, to cast off the weight of his sins. Even that encounter is a measure of penance, where you cannot strike that which is the darkness within, to not become the monster you wish to elude. I think FFIII and FFV have better gameplay overall but the story of Cecil has always resonated well in my mind. He's also my videogame crush. xP

A few years ago I did a marathon of playing through as much of the series as I could in a short time. Played through the first ten games and it was amazing to have them fresh on my mind so I could see just how fast the series could grow, follow the flavours of the era, and remind me of why I loved it so much.

Umm.. yep. I've played every game in the series except for the 13 series and 15. Now, I haven't liked every single one and I haven't finished every one I've played, but even for the ones I haven't liked/played I've always at least followed them from a distance.

Which Final Fantasy carries the most weight in your mind(or lives there rent free)?
4 and 6. While I'd say 6 is the better game, I still waffle on which is my favourite all the time. I'd probably say I liked a different one more depending on the day you asked me.

4 has so many magical moments for me, from it's overly dramatic but relatively simple story to it's incredible cast. 6 has less characters I really love but the way the story played away from having a true lead character and, of course, Kefka and the story twist. An honourable mention for me personally has to be 8s ending. While I, just like pretty much everyone else, wasn't a fan of the whole orphanage bit, the actual ending itself actually left me completely silent and lost in thought (in a good way).
