Your throwing out the word "Tyrannical thinking" over a feature that never existed on this forum. If something is ripe for abuse, than perhaps implanting such a feature would be a waste of resources.

I'm forever stuck with my FFXI name.![]()

On free name change token a year , good for a year. Otherwise from Mogstation with a 30 day cool down period.
Not really, as that's just how the world works. Many restrictions that exist (including legal laws) wouldn't exist if there weren't people that would abuse their power/authority/right and produce unwanted results. And besides, this forum isn't a democracy. SE will do what they want with it.
By this reasoning we shouldn't have name changes in game as well. Which i do kinda agree with. The forum name exists so others can identify posts as coming from a specific account. The meaning behind the name you pick might stop being relevant to you but the name itself remains relevant to others who use it to identify which posts are yours. If people keep changing their name, even if months apart, that connection gets lost.
Pick a neutral name in the first place and you don't have to worry about the meaning staying relevant to you.
I wouldn't object to a one time only forum name change for those who initially choose a name they come to regret but I would be against any form of regular name changes.
