Why are people so adverse to talking in discord within FC?

Assuming you mean talk as in actually talking through voice chat. The reason should be fairly obvious for some of us, introverts especially.. we don't want to because we neither feel comfortable with nor like voice chat.

I think the disappointment comes more down to the FC initially advertising voice and then not using it unless absolutely neccessary.
Sure, there are introverts. Lots of them. or simply people who don't like voice in general. But you don't go around advertising voice if that's the case, do you? FCs that know they're more on the chat side should mention that the same as FCs being very voice active mentioning it so people don't get the wrong idea.

For me, I'm an antisocial introvert. Being in chat with a bunch of people whether I know them or not can cause a bit of anxiety. Even small groups can do it. Anxiety and/or me talking a lot can cause my breathing problem to kick in and physically start to shut me down. It takes excessive amounts of effort for me to jump into chat with a bunch of people that I don't know. Let alone say anything. As it stands right now, I'm usually only in Discord chat with the few people that I know and am comfortable with.

My FC mostly uses discord. Even folks who don't use voice still sit in the channels to listen. Shoot.. dunno how we would plan all the events we have without some form of outside communication.

Honestly, it's a game with an in game chat function. If you can't be bothered to talk in game...well, I won't bother to talk at all and the FC is not worth my time. Simple as that.

Why do you think someone needs to talk over discord when they're playing the game outside of raiding for coordination.?
Alot of People play the game for escapism to immerse themselves in the world of their characters .
Secondly if they're typing in the FC channel it's talking

just saying to some people there is nothing more immersion breaking than having someone chatting while you're trying to enjoy a song in a zone or trying to talk while you're going through a dungeoun unless it's hey move over this way during this.

This is why my FC will generally talk on the in-game channel for just general chatter (or queries for help right-then or whatever). But anything we want the FC in general to see even if they're offline ("Hey, anyone want to run maps tonight around 8pm Eastern?" or "We're going to put together a Castrum Lacus Litore run this weekend, does anyone still need a clear?") will be on the Discord. And more specific stuff tends to be on the Discord text channels, too; the crafters in the FC will usually chat about crafter-related stuff in the crafter text channel on the Discord, rather than cluttering the FC channel.

When the FC gets together to run content (maps, Castrum Lacus Litore, Delubrum Reginae, alliance raids, whatever) people do tend to join Discord voice chat, just because it's easier to talk in voice than try to type in Party chat mid-fight. Especially if mechanics are being explained. However, we know that there are a lot of shy/introverted people (or introverts who can play extrovert well but run out of fuel to do so after a while -- hi, it me), so no one even blinks if someone joins (to listen) but mutes themselves. So I've often seen people do that so they can hear what's being said during maps or Delubrum or whatever, but who will still type responses in party chat or whatever.

Because even if it can be very useful to listen to, no one should be forced into talking on voice chat if they aren't comfortable with it. And voice chat shouldn't replace the FC channel in-game. Some people might not have a working microphone. Some folks might be playing on PS4 and have trouble doing Discord and the game at once (unless they just run Discord on their phone in functionally 'speakerphone' mode).

And some people might just be too shy to want to talk in voice chat, regardless of whether or not they have the technical capability to do so.

I guess my thought is more "it doesn't have to be all-or-nothing; you can be inclusive of both voice chat and respectful of those who are too shy to talk themselves". And I feel like a good FC should do that, and make an effort to reach out and give people the opportunity to participate in things. If people don't want to participate because they prefer going stuff alone, that's cool too! But if you feel that your FC isn't even giving you the opportunity in the first place because anyone not on voice chat is excluded...

Well, maybe it's time to find a new FC.

I prefer the classic chat over discord in games like this, it doesn't break the immersion and allows me to think about what i want to say. Also i can hear music, kids these days are just to spoiled and dont know to appreciate real the classic chats.

I enjoy using discord and chat with people while going through some stuff ingame but it took me a while to find a FC I click with. Several previous FCs were just not my cup of tea. Full twitch slang mode, whipping their virtual little friend out at every chance, a lot of humblebragging or outright boasting.

I've never been in a clan/guild that had that. That sounds horrific. Last time I was in one that required voice chat, was my old The Division 1/The Division 2 clan, and it was full of people my age and older (mostly brits and americans) and none of them talked like that. I somehow missed the whole rise of Twitch culture. Bragging comes with the territory though, at least for me, as a PvP oriented player it's part of the fun, trash talking with others.

I still will use voice chat on occasion, I just do it with select few people I've known for years. None of them play this game.

Only sus if they are portraying themselves as something via text. It's mostly just jarring, if everyone but them is talking in voice.

Cause I'm trying to play the game, enjoy the music, appreciate the voice acting... I'm not trying to hear somebody going on about completely unrelated BS on some potato quality mic with a background interference buzz and the gain boost turned up to +20 db so they're clipping like mad

I disagree, but then, I've been using voice chat in mmos for close to 16 years now.


I find it much more enjoyable to use while doing content with friends. You can actually have conversations instead of having to choose between being social and doing content.


Tho, again, the people I talk to I've known for close to 7 years and have met personally, or my static, who I get along with. All of us are late 20s or older.
