I'm glad they are not having an expansion dedicated to invading Garlemald... it would be nothing but black, grey, ice, cold... a whole lot of unhappiness. I am totally ok with the way they are trying to wrap things up quickly and get on to more high fantasy which I know Yoshi wants to do... we got a taste of that in ShB and I WANT MORE!

I really didn't want to go back to the Source, in fact, I kinda wish they had an event that desynced time between the First and the Source and we arrived after a long period of time so we could skip a lot of stuff.

The current antagonist though... ugh... I really want to see him gone fast. I wish we could get rid of him just like Indianna Jones did to that spinning sword guy in the first movie.

The other antagonist... meh... I'm as meh about him as he is about his life. Infact... I have a new name for him now... "Mr. Broody Meh Sword Guy"

I choked down a couple of videos from FFXIV content creators after seeing their clickbait thumbnails pertaining to this topic just to see if they managed to wade through similar overreactions on their own. Some peeps are even more attached to their characters than I am to mine, and that's scary. I still find it better done sooner than later to come to terms with the fact that our time in FFXIV will end someday one way, or the other. Doing so helps us appreciate the time we have in game in the present.

Anywho, try not to over speculate what's going to happen to the Scions, the story, or even the game itself. However, the Hydaelyn/Zodiark story arc has run its course and it is indeed time for something new. This should be a time of excitement, not despair.

Actually, they've been moving towards expansions that are loosely connected to each other since Mists of Pandaria, without making it a requirement to do each expansion.
Also Sargeras stopped being the big bad after they created the whole Void Lords thing with the first Chronicles book (released just before Legion).

That said, you're right that the end of the current Hydaelyn/Zodiark/Ascian story won't be the end of XIV. Yoshi-P even said as much in an interview, leading up to the release of ShB (although it's kinda tough to find the exact interview, unfortunately).

What I would wish is for less world-ending events going on.

We really get this going on nearly every corner now, so I'd welcome a slower change of pace instead of saving the day again.

God, it really is everywhere huh.
The place where this really hit me was when doing Sylph beast tribe quests and finding out their storyline is saving the world too.
I swear, this frickin place would fall apart in 5 minutes if it weren't for the WoL.

I can understand the sentiment, but really, this is a FF game we're playing: saving the world from the evil forces that would destroy or consume it is ultimately the goal of every FF game, so that sort of thing is pretty much part of the WoL's job description here accordingly.

Yes, it's cliched and hackneyed, but at it's heart, saving the world and it's inhabitants from an apocalypse is the fundamental goal of every FF game - FFXIV just has it worse being a MMO with a continuing, ongoing storyline with your character the outright champion of Hydaelyn so alas, saving the planet is always going to be dumped in your capable hands to deal with for better or for worse.

But I do like the times where the WoL is aknowledged to be still just an adventurer at heart who likes the thrill of going out adventuring (exploring new lands, killing monsters and gaining shinies) - I grinned when that was outright stated during the initial quest for the Void Ark for instance - so maybe more of that 'standard adventuring' style questing could be added in the future in addition to the more lofty "Hydaelyn is in danger again from evil Zodiark and his red masked groupies/the Empire is being elitist, jingonistic bullies again, you got to save Her/stop them!" main scenario.

And that's fine, but I really think we need to get down a step from this.
You could fill out the 'Saving X' bingo card with this expansion, and I kinda want to go back to HW, where the pacing and the plot unraveling itself was better. While just traveling the wild lands and not some doomed or occupied landscape.

The Hydaelyn and Zodiark story will end but there will be new stories. This game is still too popular and making too much money for them to just stop now that would be stupid.

That was the impression I got from the Sapphire Weapon questline. Even though it is related to empire, at this point the weapon project is not 'yet' a global extinction threat. I really enjoy being part of quests like that, which are outside the MSQ. Even if it isn't a big bad primal, or agent of Zodiark, the WoL needs adventure like a fish needs water and won't shun an opportunity to keep their edge sharp. Cid's big reveal during that questline and seeing the look on the WoLs face and enjoyment with interacting with it really sales that notion, and made that questline really enjoyable.

Obviously as the WoL continues ascension towards demigod status, significant threats will be hard to come by. But so long as he/she remains mortal, then the devs don't have to pitch extinction meteors every time just to put our heroes in peril.

I lack a citation for that, but it definetely rings true with his more recent comments on the subject.

Either way, the setting and main characters will still be important even after the main story is 'completed' (FFXI showed that when it's storyline was wound up with the Rhapsodies of Vana'diel scenario), and it should go without saying that FFXIV's service will continue beyond with a whole new scenario, so really, don't worry!
In truth, I'm getting a bit tired of the above as well. Kill one of them .. oh look another one. They're like cockroaches (and don't even get me started on the crappy villain writing in 5.4)

I'd love to see stories taking place in the New World (mentioned when you do the BLU quests) or Sharlayan mainland. There are still so many lands on the Source we haven't been to or discovered.
