COVID is also on the rise again there, just like it is in those parts of the US that have populations ignoring the "do not gather" requests.

As for the permanent work from home solutions, that was only being offered to SE's executive employees. It's not very practical in production environments. While some work from home is possible, there's always going to be those tasks that need to be carried out at the workplace. Game companies tend to be very careful about the security of their systems and that's hard to achieve if you have to monitor hundreds of unsecured workplaces (homes) instead of just a couple secured locations.
