    That's a really nice suggestion.
    Not a bad idea.
Although all it would take to become a Mentor after skipping a week is re-registering with the Smith. And skipping a week shouldn't be something that permanently revokes the status because it can be very easy to miss one week of playing the game altogether. Still, it would be something you have to intentionally keep up if you want it.

I think their point is that Mentors are playing the game just like everyone else. Should they be open to helping? Of course! That is what they signed up for. However, stopping anyone in the middle of a dungeon run for example is not beneficial to anyone, at least if it is something lengthy. Offering aid after the dungeon is over is probably best, unless they are asked for help in the middle of said dungeon of course. But people need to want that help as well. Personally, I will offer it only when asked, because past experience has taught me that jumping right into it will set someone off because the stigma "zomg Mentors are jerks" is still all too prevalent. But still, I leave my crown on. If someone wants to approach me for help I will do what I can to help them. If it is something I can't help with I will answer honestly, and offer an invite to the NN if they are a sprout. The crown should mean that a Mentor is approachable. When it comes to Mentors and non Mentors it's a two way street.

Hot take opinion. I think part of the reason that mentors aren't always doing their job is partly due to the fact that not all sprouts are new players or even in need of help. Often times they are alts and treat it just as much a social linkshell as the mentors do. This sometimes, creates an illusion that sprouts are doing the mentor role better than the mentors but in actuality, it's mentors on sprout labelled alts. Real new players, hardly if ever get in the Novice Network because you have to already know it exists to get in.

As long as the mentors are civil, I don't really see where the issue is.
And the ones who aren't usually get hit with the bans thanks to the NN.

I have seen someone had their mentorship status revoked.
You gotta be real bad for a real long time to have it done, it seems though.

its not so much the crown they are wanting its for the mount pretty much that brings people who have no desire to help in the mentor thing. Once an incentive is attach its going to attract the good and bad of the playerbase.

I have seen bad mentors and I have seen mentors that are great. But also on the flipside, even though the community is a ok in my book overall, when it comes to receiving advice though, people do get bent out of shape or you get the occasional white knight turning against a mentor and trying to paint them as the bad person when they try to help. with threats of reporting them, getting kicked and so on. YOu can see this in tales from the duty finder here and on sites. From both sides mentors being tools just as much as a sprout being a tool.

There isn't an easy fix to the situation.

Too far gone for this to ever be a proper fix. They would have to revoke a gigantic portion of mentors. Better off removing the system entirely at that point.

I think it needs to be far less about the pixel reward (aka mounts, glamours, etc) and more about what it's really for: helping people. Adding those things into a mix was a mistake in and of itself. And making the crown the Mentor symbol was also a bad idea. I still think it should have been a watering can or something.

Beyond the absurd amount of griefing that would occur, this wouldn't be a good idea because then newbies who know nothing would essentially have control over who's going to guide them. I mean, the Novice Network is already pretty bad, so it can't get much worse, but actually putting some sort of power in the hands of people who don't even understand one job, let alone three roles and such is just not a good model.

The only real thing we could implement is either a higher bar for entry for mentors, or a periodic quota for mentorship renewal. Like, you have to run a mentor roulette to duty completion once a week or something.
You could raise it as high as you'd like and you'd still have mentors who don't have time to teach you every single aspect of the game. Eventually at some point, people have to be willing to learn.

Show me one dungeon party that's willing to stop the run so that a mentor can coach everyone. I've never seen one. Everyone wants to run ahead and pull everything as fast as the healer can heal. Get everyone in the game to agree to give mentors time to teach and then come back and let me know.

Also, please get them to make DPS meters legal so that mentors CAN teach people how to get better.
