Narratively because you don't have 7+ people with you for each trial (+ for filling out whatever roles you aren't). Mechanically because perhaps they want you to actually play some of this multiplayer game in multiplayer.

Is it playing when you hang around for an hour or more, waiting in a que, not able to do very much? Forcing someone to play with others has never been the way to go in MMORPG's, because players have different ways of playing. Personally I play this game because it's the best MMORPG I've found so far when it comes to gathering and crafting. I'm not really interested in the fighting part because I'm too old and have bipolar disorder, making it hard to be of any use in a raid.
