The Tera test was just a test so people probably didn't care much about what people thought of them. Also, it's a new game so there is lots to talk about. I'm not exactly sure what you want people in ffxiv to talk about in /say right now, but there are lots of linkshells that separate chat. Population is low and slow as well. Reputations of players on servers is kind of important to people in FFXIV, so with that it may very well mean we are a more mature community and that the important things we want to talk about usually end up being said in tells or in linkshell chats. I know that I talk in say from time to time to communicate with others, but more often than not I'm actually chatting in skype or LS chat. Perhaps it is the same with others.

Sorry for your experience, but I know my LS is not part of a "zombie" community. Good luck, though.

why bring LS community in here when the OP is talking about the /s and /sh ?

edit: pretty sure the OP is talk about /s and /sh chat in generals and not only to the group of ls which is not the issue here. And you dont have to sorry for my exp

I've even been Mordion Gaol'd in XI for an "offensive bazaar comment" (it wasn't directed at anyone). Even though the fact I got Mordion Gaol'd for it was stupid, the GM did give me a nice tidbit of advice: "We really don't care what you go on about between friends, just tone it down a bit in areas that the entire server can see."

When I talk to someone in XI or XIV, it feels more like a direct conversation intended only for those involved, while /say is for those clutch situations (i.e., asking if someone is partying in a particular spot), and /shout is just annoying to talk over with all the Ifrit requests, meld requests, etc.
Yup, I remember back in FFXI when there was some drama in a linkshell of mine, the GM said that "what happens in the linkshell, stays in the linkshell", ergo it's not a GM's business to care about what people say in LS chat.

OP: it could just be the server you're on, too. Besaid has a lively community, and I'd assume the same is true of Selbina and a few others.
