I suspect that our 6 current scions, Thancred, G'raha Tia, Alisaie, Alphinaud, Y'shtola and Urianger, will stay as our core "adventuring party" and will be able to level from 80 to 90 in Avatar mode. 81 to 90 Scenario mode will likely have several "guest star" party members one or more of which may become Avatars.

Would love to see Unukalhai get some screentime again, I loved his story bits. His connection to the Ascians (whose role is supposedly coming to an end) and stance on the Empire (shaken a bit by Regula's sacrifice... maybe) feel like they could be leveraged, but I think the devs might've forgotten he exists. And between all the nerdy, white-haired Scions he'd have a hard time standing out... not that that's stopped them before.

I think we're due for one scion or so to actually die. Probably by Zenos's hand. Their intent with writing Zenos is to make you hate him. Zenos Thirst crew aside, I'm banking he'll kill one of our favorite Miqotes, if not prior to 6.0 than during early/mid 6.0 at the typical, "Major character dies here" point.
I think what they may be intending to do with Y'shtola is have her be gravely wounded, to the point of disability. Then they'll send her off to live happily ever after with Runar, somehow. I'd prefer if she actually paid the ultimate cost for her constant flirtations with death, but I don't get to write the story.
All our normal archon buddies and Sharlayans will be there, of course. We'll get at least one newbie to fill in the gaps for maimed or missing Scions. It won't be any of the second string. It'd be cool if Cid came on full time with us, instead of just showing up to raid. Damn hardcore genius.

When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore

The current Trust NPCs sans Ryne are a given, assuming the Trust system carries over into the next expansion. Maybe not all of them will follow us through the story—we could get a repeat of Urianger sitting around in the Waking Sands—but I doubt any of them will actually be killed off.
As for who our Estinien/Ysayle/Lyse/Ryne might be, perhaps Unukalhai will step into the main story. Or perhaps it'll actually be the Twins taking center stage again.
And though this a bit silly, I'm kinda hoping Ryne and Gaia will show up as All-Rounders like the Exarch/G'raha Tia did. Not necessarily at the start of the expansion, but maybe during patch content. Gaia could get Not-Warrior/Not-Dark Knight as her tank role and Summoner as her DPS role, since she was directly exposed to Eden Shiva's aether during that fight, and Ryne could get Gunbreaker. As for their Healer role, if we get a new Healer next expansion one of them could take that up, depending on what it is. If it's Chemist/Some other word for essentially the same Job, I'd expect it to go to Gaia while Ryne gets to be a White Mage.
Actually, scratch that. Scholar Ryne with a Light Shiva-Egi/Demi-Shiva as her "Fairy". Alongside Summoner Gaia with Ice Shiva-Egi/Demi-Shiva. Let this also be the expansion where they add more options for our own summons, so I can also summon Shiva-Egi. And add Demi-Shiva as a third Demi-Primal. I want to fill my party with Shivas, damn it.
I hope we see a shake up soon. I don't hate the Scions, though they're quickly overstaying their welcome for me when so many other interesting characters are cast aside in favour of giving us more of the same at almost every turn.
Sadly most of this game's fanservice seems to be based around appeasing whoever shouts the loudest as well as focusing too much on characters that exist to fawn over the player character.
I expect to see G'raha a lot, perhaps taking the role Alphinaud use to play as the main "companion"... Mainly because he will assume other kind of role. Yes, he had a lot of screen time in ShB but somehow being under the Crystal Exarch kind of made him a different person somehow, and fulfilling a different role.
I don't expect to see a lot of Y'shtola, Urianger and Thancred.
If the story goes back to Garlemald, I do expect more Cid involved into the MSQ.
