    Well, it's told to us in our first visit to Ahm Araeng that the light doesn't provide any means of heat, because it still gets freezing when it's supposed to be night. It's also linked to the afflicted and the irreversibility of their change into Sineaters. So I assume that being in the light on The First, the special light weather present in all zones with a Light Warden still living, constantly tugs at a person's aetheric equilibrium, nudging it towards the umbral aspect. Emet-selch feels this keenly, because he is almost entirely astrally aspected, being tempered by Zodiark as others already said.

    As for the host bodies affecting the Ascians and their personalities … ehh. I don't think it really affects them too much. When Elidibus possesses Zenos, he doesn't take on any of Zenos's personality. He plans and acts like himself, pretty much at all times. Same thing with Thancred and Lahabrea.

    Since they do acquire all knowledge and skills that their hosts have though, they do get to know what the person they are in is like, so that they may act accordingly. At least, that's what seems to be the case.

    Just a reminder these are the opposite way around to what we assumed pre-Shadowbringers.
