People over-pay for non-essentials all the time. Ever been to a club and paid £15 for a drink that should cost £4? People do it all the time. SE doesn't have to care about what-if-would-be customers. For clubs, they know if they sell enough drinks to keep the lights on, and that they have to move stock or it'll spoil, so there's pressure to sell and drop prices.

For SE, once they've recouped the cost to make the mount, everything else is gravy. There is literally an unlimited supply. They don't care about who can't afford it. They care that the 100 or so they sold paid for the man hours to make the thing and pure profit that can be made after.
