About new hairstyles

I was hoping they would add more "natural" hairstyles by now. We got one in ARR and they put an afro Modern aesthetic in the Gold saucer, but we haven't gotten any since. More Afro styles, dreadlocks, braids and the like. I loved the natural hairstyles Monster Hunter World added with the Iceborne expansion. I hope one day ffxiv can add something like that.

I keep thinking they will be using the whole "Hrothgar uses a completely different non humanoid head" excuse to justify never adding modern aesthetics hairstyles to them (sadly!).

As for Viera, they simply don't have an excuse not to include them on new modern styles released after ShB. They are humanoid heads with ears starting from a similar place of a Miqo.

I'm hoping some of the backend quality-of-life work that gets mentioned includes expanding the aesthetician, including fixing Hrothgar's issues with it. Then they and Viera can get more hair. Giving it to one and not the other will just end in people screaming about favoritism.

What do you mean by natural? The hairstyles you posted are typical from a certain culture, and the ones we tend to get are typical from other ones. All of them are natural to me (?).

My personal wish is for a very long hairstyle with a cute fringe, similar to what Ryne has. Gaia's hairstyle would also be godly!

I suspect it's not so much the clipping but the movement of it that's the issue. All the really long NPC hairs like Gaia or Yotsuyu are very rigid like a sheet or a heavy blanket, Fran's ponytail would look like a log swinging on the back of your head. Most hairs already don't have realistic movement, and that's okay IMO, but the extreme length would really magnify it. Especially in all the crazy combat animations.

You are well aware of the constrictions, and that lack of longer styles has nothing to do with clipping. The devs couldn't care less about it. What they do care about though is time. We usually get only one long hairstyle per expansion because they take so long to develop and get to work somewhat decent.

Those who have noticed this trend in hairstyles, i.e. short, straight, messy locks, then the reason should also present itself. It's because this style is the easiest to implement. Hair is extremely difficult to animate as each individual strand has its own physics. Because of this there is a lot most of us are willing to let slide when it comes to natural hair movement. It's something I don't personally gripe about because it's 'real enough'.

A way around this that I wish the devs would take more advantage of is the use of styles that constrict movement. That would come by way of styles with curls, braids, ponytails, buns and updos. Whenever a process seemingly involves a tedious, long and repetitive process, there is almost always a way to make it easy and efficient. Artists can illustrate complex scenery using simple techniques that create an illusion that the eye is seeing all that detail. The same can be done in this manner with hairstyles as well. I think the devs should look more into styles like the Gyr Abanain Plait, Nanamo's, Kan-E-Senna's, and Lord Hein's, which create the illusion that the hair is very long. They are very easy to animate not only because they are constricted, but the more voluminous and dense the hair is up top, the less work you actually have to do to it.

The devs also heavily favor straight hair, which ironically is more difficult to animate than curly hair as the latter constricts itself all on its own.
