If I had to guess, it looks like a modified Crystal Tools engine. Certainly not Luminous Tools (FFXV) or Unreal 4 (FF7r). Seeing as how Yoshi P is the producer, it makes sense his team would use the engine he is most familiar with.
The charater models looks closer to FFXIV but the engine looked different then FFXIV.
Commendations.
If I play dps I only give it out to other dps.
If I play tank I only give it out to healers.
If I play healer I only give it out to tank.
Only if they should be getting a commendation.
There are always exceptions to the rules!

It's worth noting that the FFXVI trailer included a disclaimer that it was the PS5 engine running on a PC that was emulating a PS5 (i.e., it was quite possibly captured off of a dev kit rather than real hardware). Anything else aside, I'm guessing that running on actual hardware might improve the frame rate and fluidity of things.

I like how it looked personally. Hoping the storyline is of a darker nature too![]()

While I noticed that it had lost some of the realism and detail aspects of FF7R and FFXV (the dog in the trailer looked so cartoon-ish and same with some of the character models), I really don't think I will mind in the long run. Sacrificing story to push out a "prettier" game is what got mainstream FF into the hole its in right now anyway. I'd much rather have a game that just tells a coherent and compelling story over a game where all the budget went into graphics any day.
They've been moving towards Unreal so it's likely unreal engine 4 or 5. 5 isn't a big change for updating base code but it provides a huge amount of improvements such as nanite.

I hope they end up reusing the FFXV engine again for something. Seems a huge waste to develop something for 10 years only to use it for one game. I'm on console so the quality differences are not as noticable but I have to agree with function over form as long as the entire thing doesn't look like dog poop. I do hope that we see Luminous Tools again someday. It looked amazing and performed solid (on console anyway).

FF16 looks effin amazing!I never got too bothered when videogames looked videogames and not movies!
I get such uncanny valley experiences from excess prettyness, so I am happy that I can trust JP developers make games which do not necessarily aim for maximum realistic visual fidelity. Stylization just always looked more pleasant to me.

I feel like we had confirmation that Project Athia is being done on Luminous, or am I misremembering? At any rate, it's being done at Luminous Studio, by the team that wrote the Luminous Engine 2.0 (and built FFXV on top of it); even if FFXVI is done on Unreal, I'd be surprised if the Athia dev team wanted to swap away from the engine they wrote (and thus likely know best).
