I know that SE at some point mentioned liking the suggestion of upgradable apartments or other sizes of apartments. Should that become a thing, then maybe there can be something tied to window planters or balcony gardening. Fingers crossed, really.

Unless it can cross, it's probably going to be a pointless gimmick.

This has been explained before. There is no dynamic weather in instances (including house interiors, apartments, FC private chambers) unlike the open world zones like the wards. If you ever check the weather inside of a house, you'll see it's always showing Fair Skies even if it had been raining outside just before you went in.

Part of how garden plots function is tied to dynamic weather. Without it, they won't work.

If people want to make what use they can of gardening in their apartments, there are always flowerpots. You can grow any seed, including the decorative flower seeds that can't be grown in the garden plots. You can use Shroud topsoil to increase yield if increased yield is possible. You can use La Noscean topsoil to get HQ if what you're growing can be HQ.

The only thing you can't do is intercross to get new seeds.

Considering how many house owners only end up growing things like shards and Krakka Roots if they grow anything at all (which usually they don't), the gardening already available via flowerpots should be sufficient for the majority of apartment/FC private chamber owners.

If SE were to solve the weather issue inside instanced housing, great, but I doubt that will ever happen. Better for players not to get their hopes up.

What about public garden plots (similar to what we see in some RL cities) where you have plots with people that have their gardens? I mean, if SE had what amounts to an outside housing space that allows for a single deluxe garden with other decorations, and had like a 6x6 section in a "ward" (so each ward holds 36 gardens) with the restriction that you cannot buy one if you own a house (but will allow you to buy a garden if you own an apartment), that would allow for players to garden and still make it somewhat social - which I think is a core design philosophy behind much of the housing system that SE does.

I think that's what players were hoping the farms were going to be when SE announced them back at the FanFests. Since then, the farms sound more like they're going to be for raising minions not crops. There's still the hope they might include gardening but i'm not going to bet on it.

I wonder if that would have been discussed this year had 2020 not happened...

In any case, there's still going to be much contention with housing until the workshop and gardens get decoupled and are made more accessible to the general playerbase.

I don't think workshops will ever be made available to the general player base. They were added as FC content and a way for FCs to earn gil to fund FC activities.

I think gardens were likewise originally intended as a way for FCs to earn gil but that was lost as a FC exclusive when private purchase of housing was enabled later. When workshops and aetherial wheel stands were added after private purchase was enabled, those did get tagged as FC estate only.

I can see workshops getting decoupled from house ownership assuming there's no screwy code that would prevent it.

I don't know if SE will ever do anything about gardening. Considering how few house owners actively intercross garden, they may not feel the need. They might consider most of the requests for access to be coming from players who just want to have everything but won't actually use it. For anyone who's casually gardening things like shards and Krakka Roots, there's always flowerpots. It's less than you'd grow with a garden plot but it's still access.

I'd still like to garden up the minions associated with it, but I really don't want to bring that up to the FC officers because there has been issues in the past where someone decides to help themsevles to the garden goods (which was a problem when we were raising Thavnarian Onions to fundraise for the Kurogane move back in HW, and also for members to purchase at a reduced cost while a bunch of us were leveling chocobos). In other words, I don't want to put the time and effort into crossing up the minions only to have a random person decide that they deserve them more than me. I imagine this is like it for many other FCs too. When you couple the FC side of things with how few own houses, and I can see why that number may be artificially lower than what SE was expecting.
