Which is really counteractive to the topic when that's not what people are asking for.
Because people like to play different characters? Constant Fantasia and name changes isn't cheap.

I mean, just because it's not a problem for you, doesn't mean it's not a problem. Why comment if you have no experience on the subject?
It's pretty much a problem for people who just like making characters/OCs with or without the RP involved. Can't speak for the ones who don't RP (anymore) but that was also a struggle for me back then.
Like how people make characters based on a job or role just like how I do it. Things like that. If the game allowed achievements and progress to be shared from my main I'd actually play my alts, or the game in general, much more.
No, things don't need account-wide. Wanting to play different characters or RP as them outside your main on an MMO where you can do everything on 1 character isn't a valid reason to enable account-wide sharing. Or else they would already have it. All other reasons are irrelevant. For instance - "They want to experience the story fresh again" - They have NewGame+ for that. The only people complaining about the account-wide sharing are individuals who can't stay on 1 character to save their life. Again, you wanting to RP as a different character or look as someone new instead of buying a fantasia - isn't a valid reason. As for OP's problem with different data centers - Well, some of you unfortunately are going to have to give up something.
On a side note - it's unrealistic as you stated. Why? Because SE already stated in previous live letters it wasn't going to happen.
I've bought hundreds od dollars worth of fantasias actually, and tried leveling an alt (time sink) - and I can tell you it isn't worth the time, or effort. A name change is worthless, a waste of money, unless you want to RP. I am not saying that people should be spending the amount I have on fantasias, but a hundred hours for each alt is not a little amount of time. If you enjoy leveling alts, frankly I think you are a masochist.

To people who parrot the "You can do everything on one character" argument, I would believe it if the game didn't allow you to make more than one character.
Making more than one character is an option they left the players to use. People are just asking it to be more convenient.
In some ways, FFXIV is behind the times compared to other MMO's.
There's a lot of benefit to the idea of making more things account bound. Particularly those that are only temporarily available or are very difficult to acquire. It's not really an unreasonable request when other MMO's make use of a similar system.
I remember when fantasia's were account wide...
