OP is far too sensationalist for my tastes, but I agree forcing the Crystal Tower raid series is a mistake.
I've heard several would-be players complain about it when I recommended this game to them.

It should probably be explained to them that they can knock all of them out in an hour or 2, if that. Quicker still if they want to unsync it. People are really blowing the CT requirement way out of proportion.
Reminder that the director and producer of this game ran the entire raid on stream just to show what it was like to play in ARR because he knows its a faceroll now.
I think 1 tier takes about as long as a general 4 man dungeon.
20 hours sounds far more probable.
I ended up getting sidetracked with hunt logs, but I've done exactly one MSQ quest so far on an alt: the Lv20 one that sends you to check out the sylphs because they might be summoning Ramuh.
I remember it was originally something like "drop in at Fullflower Comb to pick up a gift for the sylphs; get sent to slay a random ochu because sylphs like ochu root; back to Fullflower, probably more talking, now you can continue to Hawthorne". We may have also had to check the beehives.
Now it's "go to Hawthorne".
I think I've saved twenty minutes already.
And my goodness, if the rest of the game has been edited like that then it is absolutely going to speed through compared to the original pace.
One thing you will find if you are paying attention to the story is that content being old does not make it irrelevant. Things that seemed unimportant at the time come back much later and become relevant again.
For a new player experiencing the story, they're not four years apart anyway.
Complain in what context? Did you recommend it but say "the story is great but they force you to do raids" and they didn't like the sound of that?
Seriously, it's part of the MSQ now. Would you complain if that same story was added as a new MSQ patch with some dungeons attached to it? That's all it really is now, except instead of being made from scratch as part of Shadowbringers, they've woven in older content and made it part of the core story.
They have also streamlined some questobjectives.20 hours sounds far more probable.

I started a new character just to see what had changed. One of the early Gridania quests used to be "kill 6 anoles, and steal 4 of their eggs". Now that quest is "kill 3 anoles and steal one egg".
You now also get enough XP from MSQ+class quests+hunt log to level up from that alone - at least as far as I have checked. No need to do any sidequests anymore if you don't want to.
You probably told them something like "yeah, the make you do raids like in WoW, but to complete the story! It's unfair and it sucks!". Instead of "yeah they are cool bigger dungeons, with 3 parties who usually do their own thing" which is what they are.

I... don’t even know how to respond..
What a dreadfully presumptuous comment.
I was as straightforward as possible and didn't include any subjective phrasing at all.
Most people said the sheer size of players in alliance raids would give them social anxiety, while playing with 7 or 3 players wouldn't make them uncomfortable
Others said they didn't want to learn to play a raid synced down to level 50 toolkits.
I also don't believe I've ever discussed WOW in a serious context in my life either, I find FF14 infinitely more appealing.

So you go into it with your level 50 toolkit when you're level 50 and you're used to having that toolkit. It's no different to clearing a dungeon at the same level - and many of the dungeons have similar or worse gimmicks to learn than CT does at this point.
As for social anxiety from the larger group, you're ultimately still in an eight-man party and don't interact with the other two groups at all. Almost all mechanics come back to "fight X with your group of eight" but there are three Xs on the field.
Have you actually, personally played CT at this point or are you hanging back dreading the idea of "raiding"?
Just think of them as large-scale dungeons. It's what they are. If you're not confident, your group will probably pull you through and you don't have to touch it ever again.
To be honest, no I have not touched the Crystal Tower series and will need to clear it myself, but while I would rather not complete the raid - my personal grievances with needing to do so aren't great enough for me to desire to Express them in detail. So you go into it with your level 50 toolkit when you're level 50 and you're used to having that toolkit. I mentioned how parties generally function in alliances raids, but the fact that you'd still be exposed to potential text from o23 other players was too much for them.
The toolkit concern wasn't really clear to even me tbh, but it seems that several of the relative people just wished to rush through the free trial or ARR/ HW and not spend much time polishing their job play until SB onwards.
