I guarantee you most of that kind of stuff is done for that reason. Like two dudes playing as cat girls in ERP.
I had to look for it (and edit it), but this is pretty much it.

Everything is fetishized. The difference with 'futanari' is that they're fictional. Well, hermaphrodites do exist in the real world but are exceedingly rare and aren't just 'women that also have a willy' as futas are normally played. People who play futanari are also generally not playing 'trans' characters either. It's a fictional fetish.
The difference is that lesbians/gay men are real, and have real relationships. Futanari are a purely fictional fetish. There are a few theories on why they're popular. Straight guys wanting to have a penis involved in a sex scene but not the rest of the male body. It's similar to how a lot of lesbian....'stuff' is actually catered to men who want to watch it rather than actual lesbians. Regardless of the reason, it's portrayed in a purely fictional way rather than being played like an actual trans person or hermaphrodite.
In short, the difference is 'gay men and lesbians are fetishized. Futas just are a fetish.'
A fetish is just something specific that you're abnormally fixated on; it could be a specific act, body part, etc. Homosexuality isn't a fetish because it's too broad. Certain things that homosexuals do, or certain ways they look/act could be a fetish for some people, though.
That's fair. Gay people (well, queer people in general, honestly) are definitely fetishized by others. I just wanted to make sure that no one was mistaken about them being A Fetish. Wording definitely matters because it can imply different things.Everything is fetishized. The difference with 'futanari' is that they're fictional. It was also meant as an aside to the person who mentioned it first, so now everyone else can go back to whatever they were arguing about. I just wanted to pop in to make sure there wasn't any misinformation on that front.![]()

No, I'm talking about the women RPing as overly gay caricatures and playing into gay stereotypes. The guys that RP as lesbians and act like it's the best thing since sliced bread. Go to an RP server. You'll see it all.
Roleplaying as a gay character that way doesn't make it a fetish, it's just roleplaying a stereotype, which is a different kind of bad.
If I've learned two things about the internet in the time I've used it they're these.
The amount of surety you have that someone is wrong is directly proportional to the vehemence with which they'll defend their wrong belief.
Anything is a fetish if you try hard enough.
Sorry, but roleplaying a gay character doesn't make it inherently sexual. Sure people ERP as them, as they ERP any type of character, but to act like RPing as a gay character is so easily a fetish contributes to the belief that being gay is somehow more sexual than being straight.
Though I think we're getting way off topic here, so maybe we should pack it in.
