Oh yeah, forgot people don't like to actually try anymore.

There was no challenge in claim competitions. You make it sound like there's some skill in mashing a provoke macro for 30 seconds every hour till the mob actually pops.
It was boring.

I agree with the OP. Like Gath said, the main contributing reason is a lack of goals. Another reason I can see is that we are limited to 8-man parties. In FFXI alliances could mean up to 18 people. That's 18 people who have a chance to learn about things as well as potentially receive a decent peice of gear. Outside of a few shells I've been apart of who cycle people in and out for things like ifrit, I see alot of people left behind. Its something a shell might struggle with because who wants to coordinate a run that lasts several hours to incorporate your 50+ members into what ever event that is going on, especially on a reacurring basis. I hope that the future, with companies that entail people devoting themselves to a specific group holds more activities that bring people closer together and teach loyalty.

I hear claim botting is hard, and/or I hear calling your LS mates at 3:16 in the morning because HNM has popped is a healthy and normal activity. It's a wonder why my job (3-11 AM shift) has so much trouble finding people -- everyone loves that shift.
Having said that, Gath's entire theory is based on the false assumption that people don't suck. A little competition is a good thing, but make that competition too rigid and demanding, and you'll see backstabbing, player poaching, and all sorts of elite drama. Maybe Gath's FFXI server was filled with sunshine and rainbows, but back in the day on Remora, there was a near constant stream of tears from the creme de le creme having shitfits over this reason or that.
Oh, and Gath -- for Christ's fucking sake, if you're going to write in the third person, be consistent. If you passed the second grade, you'd have learned that switches tenses and 'persons' in a single piece of writing is an amateur mistake. But maybe you purposely do it to troll, so if that's the case, kudos to you.

I'm allergic to effort.
Um... I guess you just don't know how to play and you're complaining. Pshhhhhh you don't realize what a good game is n' stuff.
Closest one to the server winz!
I've been avoiding this thread... it's become quite the joke. People seem to be more obsessed with how Gath types than what he actually said. He made some accurate points.
Now back to your regularly scheduled trollfest.
