Yep. To me, gladiators are kind of the antithesis of a paladin. One is basically a barbarian who lives most of their lives in a cage and takes their bloodlust out on others in an arena... and the other is a noble knight fighting for a holy cause. Gladiators don't become paladins... gladiators bash paladins with a cudgel.

The gladiators in this game are closer to, but not exactly modeled after the highly trained, highly paid free type. You are right, gladiators don't in general become Paladins. You, as the warrior of light do. Basically every job that is available to a particular class is a special case.

I would love it if combat classes were made viable as they level. Bard is more an archer than a Bard. They should let Archer become a Job and make Bard and off shoot that becomes a real Bard.

Yeah, definitely. FFT's bard was nothing like this game's bard.

Ehh outside of the context of FFXIV I would agree, but within the context of FFXIV I do not. Sure the animations for running/jumping change, but that's more to reflect your official Shinobi training vs. just a deft fighter. The context within the game is that Eorzea's Rogues are as close as it gets to Doma's Shinobi. They even interact and work together in the later Ninja quests.

Plus it's always been an FF tradition for Thieves to to turn to Ninjas. In FF1 the Thief's promotion is to Ninja. In FF4, Edge has all of the Thief like abilities in addition to the Ninja ones(also y'all saying he's lame got bad taste imo). FF6, Clyde was a notorious thief/train robber before he became Shadow. In FFT, though you may stay a THF, you need 5 or so levels in it, in addition to level 2 or 3 in a couple other things to unlock Ninja.

In general, in the games where these jobs are separated from one another(FF3, FF5, and FFXI), usually the THF is specifically for the acquisition of extra treasure through stealing, mugging, or job traits. Since that's not really a thing within FFXIV's loot system... ehh... I don't see the need to separate them. Not enough of a battle distinction in my mind, since they still use all of the same WS animations already.

Having recently gone through BRD quests 30-45, they thoroughly explain why this is. I wouldn't think of Bards as psuedo archers, but rather archers who have been through and seen some serious shizz. It is one of the best and most sensible transitions from class to job I've encountered thus far in the game. Other jobs such as PLD totally cast away your Gladiator roots, and beat into your head "You're a Paladin now!"

However, I do get your point. If they still did the branching out with jobs like SMN/SCH, they could have easily also let archers choose something like Ranger, which would focus more on pure damage rather than group support. If they really wanted BRD to be a bowmage way back when, that would have been the way to go.

I do wish there were a way to have jobs such as DRK, AST, MCH, and all of the jobs introduced post 3.0 be available from the get-go at level 1. What sucks is that it gets real freakin tricky since some of the jobs (mainly the aforementioned 3) rely heavily on you "being in Ishgard."

I suppose that, theoretically speaking, they could have it such that you could play a "class version" of the job right up until you're able to obtain the job stone. In this sense, you could say that you were always swinging a greatsword around but you weren't a """"real"""" Dark Knight until you stumbled upon Fray in Ishgard. As to how this could work from a technical standpoint? Beats me. Probably complicated... but I do wish it were possible. I do have some friends who wished they could have played through ARR as, say, a RDM or SAM right off the bat instead of playing through ARR to unlock em.

This is why I quite enjoyed the 60-70 Paladin stuff, because it actually drew on our GLA roots for once.

Not really sure why people are making such a fuss about ninjas and rouges. They are teh same thing in this world. The only difference is one is from the east and the other west. They serve the same function. One upholds the code by killing any who break it and spying on them to find out who all needs to be gutted. The other serves a master and spies and murders for them getting the job done even if you die in the process.

wow i was just commenting on this. went to ninja today, and even though it's not bad. I enjoyed the quests, mood, guildmates, story and everything more from the rogue class. never been a fan of ninjas either, I much more prefer a dirty fighter, who gets bloodied in the underbelly and connected to the shadows than a expert assassin with eastern theme.
