Don't want the stuff, don't buy the stuff. It's really that simple. SE's online store and FF XIV shop are very, VERY tame in comparison to other things. I would hardly call their practices predatory. They are business and businesses exist to make money. That is what they are doing.

That's up to them.

Technically, when you buy an expansion, you're only guaranteed the x.0 content. You're not even guaranteed to have any subsequent patch until the next expansion. And the content you have can vary. You can have less of a particular content (dungeon) or even none of a particular content (deep dungeon) in an expansion.

The article, from 2013, 7 years ago, does not deal with a 'cash shop' per se, but about the differences between Free2Play and subscription-based MMOs on the marketplace at that time.

Items from the mog station if it did not exist would be in the game. If their only source of cash flow were our subs. Then yes they would because its an item people have requested and why would they be? Because they want to keep your sub and if you say I want this mount/minion/glamour/etc and you get enough support they will do it.

Where's our male viera/female hrothgar, or my viera hairstyles? This is just not the case. If they have the money, time, the resources to make them they may include some of them sure. They are under no obligation to include any of the frivolous trash the community may want, or demand, included with their sub. Funnily enough, is has been said that SE siphons out our subs, and the mogstation apparently goes back into the game. I don't have a source for that, just seen it parroted on here.

Just because you don't have them yet doesn't mean you won't. The community does want those things and they will get them. Even if that is true, which I doubt, that still takes into account a 2nd cash flow. Turn that off and subs are the only money. Cash shops are very sporadic and over high revenue on some months and very low on others. That is why I doubt that the cash shop funds the game while they siphon money elsewhere. It's not a realiable income.

They are making money with your sub fee. Then selling you an item that belongs in the game which you are paying them to create just to put on the shop instead of putting it in the game you spent your money on.

The item would not ever be "in game" at all if it were not a cash shop item. Those items are created by a different business unit, generally for a market that does not pay a subscription fee to play FFXIV.

Yoshi P has said that it's basically a whole other team as far as Mogstation/FF XIV Store items are concerned. What they add to the shop would not be in game otherwise. As far as physical items from the NA/EU/etc store I'm guessing that's somewhere else in SE's HQ.

Yes. Many of the Mogstation items are made by Korean and Chinese 3rd parties who run the Korean and Chinese ports of the game over there. Some of their promotions and designs make their way over to our cash shop.

Other stuff is made by a team that specifically only makes cash shop items that are made from the very beginning to be sold as cash shop items.
