It's not until you get to route B in Nier or go through 9S' playthrough in Automata, that things really start to piece together. As of right now, we're technically on the "A route" of the NieR raid. When it was said the second raid would be more "NieR-like," I'm assuming that will be the "B route." Who knows what happens on the last raid. Will it be the"Route C?" It's still too early to tell
To be fair, though, if you know Nier Automata at all and didn't raise an eyebrow when 9S was revealed as the final boss of the first raid or didn't choke up a bit when you found the room full of "2B" corpses in the post raid quest I'm not sure what to say. Sure we haven't got a lot of meat so far but the appetizers we have been given are better than a lot of people seem to be giving the story so far credit for.

I can see being perturbed about it not tying deeply enough into FF14 (yet?) but if you come at it purely from a Nier sequel perspective, I would say we've definitely been given some things to chew on.
