Presumably because anyone can pretty easily make more items? I'm honestly skeptical that any one person is able to completely lock out an entire item, as they can't really control the materials needed to make said item, leaving anyone free to put up more.
It's very easy to lock other players out of the market if you're more players agreeing to do it. That's why I mentioned the suspected cartels. If you have enough gil all you have to do is jump around on all the servers in your datacenter and buy up those items required. It's endgame items not iron ore or steel ingot:-P. So yes a few players can lock out others and control prices on selected items. Maybe it's time to remove the buying options from other servers.

That would just make it easier to control things on one specific server. In the long run if enough people are that gung ho about controlling things you really can't do anything to stop them.

It's one thing to sell it on hugely reduced manner. But this method was just out of spite to everyone else selling.
Just selling each item 500 gil cheaper than the one he puts in (e.g. 1x9500, 1x9000, 1x8500, ... , 1x4500). It's not two or more people competing with each other by putting their one item 500 gil fewer, but one and the same person.
About a day ago he took it all out to reduce it further but now in 50gil steps (if it were again 500-steps, we'd have items below 0gil).
Small Imitation Window
Tbh, players don't need to ruin the Market Board. Enix went and did that already with the crafting changes.
Because they once told me someone lowballing them was annoying her. And another time I put items for sale on her low prices, then she pulls her items off to list them higher again so my items would sell on that low price...
Most of the items, most items that make money or used to for sure. I always try to make items she isn't selling but then few days later suddenly everything I am selling she is selling too and much lower price. She usually has windows and other certain items for sale so I try to not touch her territory but surely she doesn't care about others. She has already made it clear it's just to annoy people, no matter if she can make money or not herself.Has this player monopolized all the furniture items on the MB? I highly doubt that. You won't do very well in the MB game if you give up every time someone gives you competition. If this is a crafted item, have you considered putting up the raw mats for sale, or produce another furniture item? You're also not going to do too well if you don't broaden your scope on the items you put up for sale.
In short, you have to adapt to the MB. It will never adapt to you.
Haha... She likes to keep imitation windows to herself, god forbid if anyone makes windows and lists them below hers she will make 15 more and drop the price like nuts. She doesn't care about the money, she cares about keeping that item in her control.
I know of multiple people who own 3+ accounts just so they can monopolize one of the mainstream markets using bots (And probably engage some off-hand RMT as well).
I think they mostly just get a weird amount of satisfaction out of "owning" a particular market through excessive supply and aggressive undercutting, though.
